Unpopular opinion, but a lot of this "doing it right" mentality is how we wind up with games all feeling the exact same.
Difficulty spikes, weird controls, ropey onboarding all of it critical to prevent games feeling like they're ground down and pumped out safe mush.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only dev with a deep-seated belief in the power of a sittable chair. To add to my thoughts in the video: I think in-game sittable chairs allow devs to be gracious hosts to their players, to help them feel welcome to an experience without an expectation to act.๐ช

Sorry I'm not more open-minded about LLMs, it's just some fucking maniacs shoveled out a bunch of useless bloatware featuring that technology, did not give me any chance to opt out, reorganized the entire economy around it, zeroed out gains made by green energy, and made it impossible to buy RAM

When Frontier First Encounters launched in 1995, it was a DOS-only game in 320x200 resolution. Some 30 years later, we can all enjoy the same brilliant game in much greater detail, thanks to some enterprising and talented coders. Details of FFED3D are at tinyurl.com/FFED3D-AJ

The demo for Alliance Tales: Battles for the Frontier wants to scratch that X-Wing/Wing Commander itch.

TIE Fighter Total Conversion in VR with a VR controller interactable cockpit is phenomenal. God I love this game, it's so cool re-visiting it like this.

Yeah, I can see myself making the switch eventually. I'm not sure if the Steam Frame is going to come with improvements to Linux support or if it's going to require SteamOS (and its proprietry hardware), but hopefully we'll see some progress in the coming years...

There is a version of this where MS has seen the uptick of Linix, seen that Steam Machine could make Windows gaming obselete and thought: "actually let's just make the OS free, let them install what they want with power features behind a subscription." But I just don't think the execs are that smart

Borked Elite Dangerous servers mean I'm writing up the next batch of experiences with Next Fest VR Titles instead. All from my Wednesday Twitch stream. As with the first batch, I used Steam's VR-tag feature explorer, and a randomiser to pick each game. We found some gooduns! #vr #pcvr ๐งต

An astounding project still. Basically two full remakes of TIE Fighter in one. A more straightforward one that just adapts the original missions to the new engine, and a 'reimagined' version that asks what it would look like if the game was completely unbound by DOS-era hardware.
Both are excellent

hl2vr isn't just one of the best vr games available, it's by far the best way to play hl2. flat hl2 is IMO a game that did not age well in the slightest. half of the game's chapters have me saying "not this shit again". but hl2 in vr? it's like you're playing it for the first time, a wide eyed youth

So they already have the tools to improve recommendations, they just aren't using them? I have no idea why they've buried this, it's actually pretty cool.

I want everyone to play 868-BACK (sequel to 868-HACK) which is a computer-hacking strategy roguelike where you are working to dismantle capitalism one server at a time.
It's Michael Brough's new game, the demo is up and it is pretty amazing. <3

It's probably similar, yeah. Social media pushes whatever is driving engagement, Steam is pushing whatever is driving sales. Both probably succeed on some level but failing to fully consider what the user is actually looking for must have some cost. In my case, extreme frustration

Hi Alex, we're making Alliance Tales: Battle for the Frontier, a 90s style story-drive space combat sim with a title that's probably too long.
