Elizabeth Van Lew (October 12, 1818 – September 25, 1900) was a Union spy during the American Civil War and one of the most effective and daring intelligence agents in U.S. history. Born into a wealthy slaveholding family in Richmond, Virginia, Van Lew developed strong anti-slavery beliefs after attending school in Philadelphia. Despite living in the heart of the Confederacy, she remained loyal to the Union and used her social status and resources to support Union prisoners and gather intelligence. used hollowed-out eggs, invisible ink, coded messages, and false-bottomed dishes, as well as hiding notes in books, shoes, and clothing to smuggle secret messages during the American Civil War. Van Lew operated an extensive spy network—often under the guise of being eccentric or mentally unstable (“Crazy Bet”) to deflect suspicion. She recruited servants, including the formerly enslaved Mary Bowser, who spied inside the Confederate White House. The information Van Lew provided to Union generals, including Ulysses S. Grant, proved crucial to the Northern war effort. After the war, President Grant appointed her postmaster of Richmond (1869–1877), a rare federal post for a woman at the time.

While this kind of talk is a cathartic way of venting frustrations about the double standards at play, I think it undermines the goal of protesting the administration’s disregard for long-standing immigration policies to make the same discriminatory statements about “anchor babies,” etc.
