I only encountered this (using local for iv insertion) when I came to new Zealand. So I had this tested on myself (n=1). As someone who previously had 14G inserted with no local, maybe it's me, but the local hurts way more than the usual 20/18G. It's also very rare to put in an awake big bore IV.
