Ya know who doesn’t have to think about the price of items at the grocery store, restaurants, or really the price of most anything they want to buy for themselves?

Billionaires.
Millionaires.
Almost all of our US senators and congresspeople.

I can't stop thinking about that first line - "once you ditch needing to be believed, then you have a conversation on your hands."

Makes me think of how hard it is for most of us to "ditch needing to be believed." Whether as a therapist, a patient, or a human. Some people seem incapable of it.

There's a chance the left-wing candidates (Kat, Simmons, Huynh) could get a plurality of the votes but none of them win.

We can't let that happen.

Kat has the best chance of beating the establishment candidate. For this and many other reasons, we should all rally behind her.

"Once you ditch needing to be believed, then you have a conversation on your hands. You don’t need to be right. You don’t need to persuade the other person."

Therapists are made to "teach" these days. Sometimes I think it's terrible.

A toxic environment poisons people. We should make the environment less toxic so people don’t get poisoned.

But just removing someone from the toxic environment doesn’t mean they will no longer be poisoned.

We should make less toxic environments AND help people recover from being poisoned.

If you can't solve in a post the hard problem of consciousness the machine is conscious. Check mate mother fuckers

β€œConsciousness … moves us towards meaning” seems very right to me.

I tend to agree with the neuropsychoanalytic view that the purpose of consciousness is to make meaning of feelings. No indication AI is *feeling* anything, especially since it lacks the essential instrument for feeling (the body).

07.03.2026 16:49 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

The base assumption is inorganic objects are not conscious because they lack bodies capable of producing conscious feeling.

That may end up being wrong, but if you’re going to make a radical claim like, β€œmachines are conscious,” the burden of proof is on you, not the rational skeptics.

07.03.2026 16:28 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 1

Consciousness is embodied. All irrefutably conscious creatures have organic bodies and are conscious of feelings through their bodies.

Claude has no body. Any β€œfeelings” it appears to have are very plausibly explained w/o resorting to a fundamental change to our base understanding of consciousness.

I just left a concert fundraising for the National Immigrant Justice Center to head to Broadview.

Here’s why:

Understandable. I’m highly ambivalent about analytic institutes in general (I mostly think they all should be burned to the ground), but also I love analysis and this is what we’ve got to work with so πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Fascinating!

This made me think whether any of this stuff has come up in my own analysis, and sure enough, it has! And kind of in a big, central way, which I had not at all consciously considered when writing that post yesterday.

Fuckin unconscious, man...

Yess well put.

The older I get, the more it seems we are all just trying to do our best with lousy, limited cultural translations of very enigmatic subjective experiences.

When patients use an identity label, I assume I (we?) don’t really know what they mean until they tell/show me more.

This has been part of the trans-kids moral panic for years, gay adults going "If I grew up now, they'd convince me I'm trans."
If your movement had real evidence, you wouldn't be pointing to alternative-universe hypotheticals! Child psychologists know the difference between gay kids and trans kids

I’m not a child psychologist, but I am a psychologist who works with lots of trans and queer folks, and I can say with great certainty that psychologists can’t spot the difference between a trans kid v a gay kid.

We help people develop their self-understanding, not tell them who they are.

I appreciate the impulse to appeal to medical authorities, but medicalizing gender has done a lot to shape our current anti-trans hellscape.

To be clear, a doctor is as capable of determining a person’s β€œtrue” gender OR sexuality as they are capable of determining a person’s β€œtrue” favorite color.

Just like there’s no reforming ICE, there’s no reforming this. The AIPAC-funded Democratic establishment has to be entirely dismantled.

It’s maddening that chuck seems more upset he wasn’t fully briefed than the fact that trump has launched an illegal, unconstitutional, immoral war.

A person can be genuinely anti-war, anti-imperialist, and anti-military industrial complex *and* allow for the possibility of military action as an absolute last resort in defense of the right to national self-determination.

That's Kat's position, and I think its a popular one in my part of #IL09

Kat Abughazaleh on Israel

"It's important that any solution has full legal rights for anyone living there.

And that it's decided by the people that actually live there. We spend so much time as a country interfering in other countries and dictating how they live, and it's just made places worse."

If this is allowed to stand, it will kill thousands of people and cause pointless suffering for many more.

I doubt that anyone will look back on this era of social media and say that it appealed to our better nature. For all the benefits these tools provide, we have to call them what they are: A splitting accelerant.

As much as I strongly disagree with Laura Fine, at least she seems to know where she stands.

Daniel Biss refusing to answer yes/no on one of the clearest moral issues of today is not high-minded β€œnuance,” it’s cowardice.

Anyway, vote for Kat, who speaks and acts with moral clarity and conviction.

We can't fall into right-wing populism’s lie that the most vulnerable in society are to blame for wealth inequality in our countries. We need to build movements that tell the truth: the story of wealth inequality is not a cultural one, but a class one.
