I have now. At first glance, it's talking about AI under heavy post-training quantization, which is an active area of research but very limited in scope. It isn't written in a way that would get academic acceptance, and doesn't look groundbreaking. The author is a startup CEO, so I'm suspicious.

Classical and Koine Greek inflectional morphology meant that certain sequences of letters almost always represented the end of a noun or verb, so they didn't really need spaces. Other parts of speech weren't really seen as separate words until much later.

I don't know a word that means the opposite of "bellwether", but if there is one, it applies to Softbank. That they're dumping NVIDIA and "focusing" on OpenAI tells me the boom isn't over for NVIDIA, but you should get out of money-furnace LLM companies ASAP.

One of my 2 science fiction WIPs is set in a future where AI has done little to replace workers and a lot to replace management, and tries to deturn tropes about AI ruling the world. Also, it has the viable system model in it. And some sex. It's not working as a story yet but it's getting there.

New word of the day: "Clanker lover." Acquired from r/MyBoyfriendIsAI but already in the Urban Dictionary.

I know, I know, only the old people remember this. But yeah, this is what Trump was seen as in 1989.

I've long thought and this year has only accelerated it, that the future we got is part Philip K Dick, a helping of John Brunner, a serving of Norman Spinrad, and a dose of weirdness none of them could ever conceive.

AI is like reading The Economist. It *sounds* like they know what they're talking about, as long as they're talking about things you don't really know about. As soon as you have a real job you want AI to do, you're confronted with costs and problems and the risk that none of it will ever work.

AI Is a Mass-Delusion Event Three years in, one of AI’s enduring impacts is to make people feel like they’re losing it.

Hello. I wrote a nice long essay about AI and this very strange moment where we're constantly told we're living in the dawn of a strange new future but the only thing that's actually clear is that everyone feels pretty unmoored and uncertain. I hope you'll read it

I'd hate to imagine him alive today, age 63, either a Z loyalist or in exile somewhere.

No idea. I don't know the author, but no, he hasn't tiptoed around what he thinks of AI shaming or shamers.

Scott Martens @scottmartens.bsky.social, an AI nerd bitching about people not liking AI, skeeted:

A friend of mine, a gifted Al engineer, quit Bsky and went back to X because of crap he took here for being in Al and linking to something on Hugging Face. He's a nice guy, I'm an asshole, so I'm still here.

But posts like this make me reconsider writing my "Is Al the New International Jew?" essay.

I would maybe reconsider that again.

"My hot take is all that matters and the fact that the author specifically contradicts it in an effort to make a more nuanced argument is irrelevant."

I think this is a bad take. You can read the actual paper at advait.org/files/sarkar... and see that it includes the passage below.

My take is much, much harsher than Sarkar's: AI-hate is the "socialism of fools" for the internet age, a legitimate rage against the wrong damn machine.

I don't think any of the people commenting on this actually read the paper. It's here: advait.org/files/sarkar...

I'm going to be the contrarian asshole this time and say I like this paper and I think it's main point is necessary and valid. Y'all can hate on it - that's valid too - but have actual *reasons*, not just whatever anti-AI nonsense you've picked up online. Especially in light of the paragraphs below.

AI Rights for Human Flourishing AI companies are racing to create Artificial General Intelligence (AGI): AI systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work. If they succeed,

If this were labelled as SF, I would call it derivative, but as academic economics, I'm calling it Kool-Aid-drinking. This is AI-fantasy, not really existing AI.

The Dutch also have bad food and terrible beer. I was required to know that to be naturalized. :)

(I'm kidding, I got Belgian citizenship by proclamation. There were no requirements.)

When the Vlaams Belang was campaigning on "multiculturalism has failed," I kept saying: "Multiculturalism has never been tried. If you can't even cope with people speaking French in suburban Brussels, how are you going to cope with black people and Muslims?"

This POV was not widely appreciated.

Netflix uses generative AI in one of its shows for first time Firm says technology used in El Eternauta is chance ‘to help creators make films and series better, not just cheaper’

The claim here of productively using video-generating AI for something is credible. Apparently they used it to create footage of a building collapsing. I can image using simple prompts and producing something acceptable. But this is pretty small stuff.

And basically it costs too much to fix everything. It's like the QWERY keyboard: An old standard that's too entrenched to change. Tech is full of this stuff, even before computers. /thread
