Another well attended session at Patcham on Saturday, saw the remaining finds from Rocky Clump sorted, marked and bagged. The hardworking team completed the processing tasks by the middle of the afternoon. Extra time was not required and VAR** was used on only two occasions!

This project has been generously supported by the Council for British Archaeology South-East. A display of finds with East Grinstead Museum is planned for late spring 2026, and a display will also take place at the Sussex Archaeology Symposium on 21 March.

The destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, Bay of Naples in AD 79 is well known. Although we will review the dramatic endings, this talk will concentrate upon what we know about the functions of these cities before the eruption of Vesuvius, and the lives of their inhabitants.
