I read the Slate article about this book and ohhh geez it made me feel extremely uncomfortable.

It is so hard to be trans right now, y’all. Like, I can’t speak for everyone but I’m white-knuckling it pretty much constantly at this point. I hope cis people are understanding how much is at stake for us in this moment: It’s literally our right to exist as ourselves that is being stripped away.

Intense northern lights in pink and magenta, with neon yellow close to the horizon, dance in a starry sky and are reflected in a creek that flows through the middle of the frame, with steep silhouetted hillsides left and right.

I really hope we get another good aurora borealis show this year before the solar maximum is really gone. This is from one of the late 2024 events, in northern Pennsylvania's Pine Creek Gorge.

It was a drizzly Christmas morning at the lower Salt River, and I found this lone great egret fishing out in the current.

A small bright red songbird with black wings and tail and black racing stripes over its eyes is perched on the top of a reed as it sways in the breeze. Looking closely we can see that the bird is wet, as light reflects from the water in its feathers. The background is out of focus sage-green reeds and other desert vegetation.

A vermilion flycatcher in Arizona - I was startled when I realized that this lil birb was divebombing into a water feature (at Sweetwater Wetlands) as a bathing strategy: cannonball into the water, flop around for a second, shoot back out to the perch. So fun to watch! #photography #birbs

Shot at ground level, the image shows a jackrabbit with soft brown fur sitting upright in the image to the right of center, and looking somewhat towards the left. The rabbit is surrounded by the sparse grass of this arid region. She is sitting calmly and appears to be giving a bit of side-eye to the camera.

This white-tailed jackrabbit was trying to be really polite about the dumb jokes I was telling.

Organizations like Appalachian Horse Project have done an amazing job provisioning the horses with mineral blocks and supplemental hay, however, though one group can hardly put a dent in the scale of the problem across the Appalachian coalfields.
