Noem’s fall from grace can be traced back when she had been considered a potential VP pick for Trump’s 2024 election campaign, only for her candidacy to be stifled by revelations in her autobiography about shooting her ‘worthless’ hunting dog.
Noem’s standing with President Trump has soured recently over a 200 million $ ad campaign, incendiary responses to issues like the ICE killings in Minnesota and an alleged relationship with Senior Advisor to DHS Corey Lewandowski.

Mamdani threatened a property tax increase unless NY Gov. Hochul (D) agrees to tax the rich. His endorsement of Hochul’s 2026 reelection bid also raised questions. The NYC-DSA said that she « sided with her billionaires donors while offering working-class New Yorkers crumbs. »
Is Mamdani-mania peetering out? Mayor Mamdani (D)’s 2025 win was seen as a boon for the Democratic Socialists of America.
However, progressive enthusiasm fell with his 2027 budget. Blaming the Adams' shortfall, the plan holds off on ambitious spending and cuts $ from the NYPD.
A University of Houston poll from the 11th of February shows the Republican primary being led by Paxton with 38% to Cornyn’s 31% and Hunt’s 17%. The Democratic primary is led by Crockett with 47% to Talarico 39%.

Jasmine Crockett is highlighting the importance of turning out the Democratic base and portraying herself as a ‘Texas tough’ fighter.
Talarico’s campaign places a lot of emphasis on reclaiming religion from the right and fighting billionaires and corruption.
Paxton is receiving flack for his impeachment by the Texas House and alleged adultery.
Wesley Hunt hopes to gain traction as an acceptable alternative.
For the Democrats, US representative Jasmine Crockett (D) and state representative James Talarico (D) are vying for the nomination.
Texas Senate : a divided field.
On the Republican side, incumbent Senator John Cornyn (R) is facing a primary challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) and US Representative Wesley Hunt (R).
Cornyn, in office since 2002, is accused of being insufficiently conservative.
