Absolutely brilliant talk by @dawnc05.bsky.social today at @learningmet.bsky.social. Not easy to listen to the awful experiences she shares, but so in awe of the Dawn’s commitment to challenge and protest.
Our speaker for today’s @learningmet.bsky.social seminar is our own Dr Dawn Cavanagh, speaking about her organisation’s work for people with learning disabilities & autistic people in locked wards and for independent living. Stolen Lives, Activism & the Role of Academia in Defending Human Rights. 🧵

We are stronger in our activism together. RK has faced racism in campaigning but has had opportunities to help reduce stigma eg speaking on Punjabi TV channels, talking at local schools about allyship. Everyone from marginalised communities should have opportunities to live the best lives possible.
'Sitting on the margins, I can only achieve so much' - Ramandeep Kaur urges researchers and policy makers to work with, and for, people from marginalised communities, like her, and her son, Harry.

Absolutely gutted to miss this one - but this is set to be a stellar masterclass in journalism ⬇️
Really looking forward to presenting on this webinar on Childhood and Disability next Tuesday at 5pm UK time, along with the amazing Anastasia Todd and Susan Flynn. Tickets still available:

Fab thread from the seminar which was brilliant. In awe of @georgejulian.bsky.social. ♥️
This is looking like a great seminar series on activism, here at MMU. Join us on Wednesday to hear about @georgejulian.bsky.social ‘s vital work as a citizen journalist and coronial inquest court reporter, and check out the other activists speaking later in the series.
Do you know that each local authority in England should have an up to date autism strategy? Well it turns out many don't. Find out about our study and database here youtu.be/6Xv-N4K4gWc?...
Good for them. Look forward to hearing more.
Agree.
Meticulously argued, sadly the evidence is all there.
So, so excited my new book is pretty much in publication. ‘Critical Health and Learning Disabilities; an Exploration of Erasure and Social Murder’ is out in the summer (Routledge).
It's important everyone over 14 on their doctor's learning disability register has an annual health check.
They can help you stay well and find any problems early.
If you haven't been offered one you can ask your doctors practice if you can have one.

Last Monday (20th January) I delivered my two guest lectures for the Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of East London to 60 doctoral candidates!
In the first lecture we discussed how learning disabilities are defined (by whom, what 'expertise' is drawn upon e.g. (1/9)

There was a notion, at the time, that the pandemic would be a great 'leveller'. Now, as LA burns, we see that wealth and privilege is no protector. But 'business as normal' resumes quickly. I'm always wondering what can make us step into another's shoes and truly walk around in them... changing us.
It’s been a stunner so far given we’re warm and can walk to town. 🤞
