My nickname was “Hyphy” in the 10th grade because I had just moved to a city called Victorville (hour from LA) & I was from Oakland at the height of the Bay Area’s most prominent movements. I wrote about that period of tumultuous adolescence—gang culture—losing a teammate to murder—etc. in an essay.
