An accidental pansy in the toilet planter, alongside a well-established dandelion.
Purple crocuses finally blooming, after a few weeks of yellow flowers.
This unidentified weed. We’re excited to find out what it will become.
Daffodils almost ready to make their yellow trumpeted appearance.

An all black image with white text overlaid on the black. The text reads: "Day of Mourning. British Columbia grieves with Tumbler Ridge."
Today is a Day of Mourning in BC for the tragedy in Tumbler Ridge.
Our thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives, students and staff, first responders, and the entire Tumbler Ridge community.
Please join us in observing a moment of silence at 12:00 PM (PST).
So today's speech by the LG *is* the throne speech in an altered form
I did not pick that up from yesterday's press release
Sounds like it will be short and focused on the Tumbler Ridge tragedy, rather than the government's priorities for the session

RCMP press conference is happening now. RCMP say that as police approached the school, they were shot at. The suspected shooter is identified as Jesse Rootsellar (I'm not sure if that's the correct spelling.)
Hey Canadian media ... "born as a biological male" is not the move when you're reporting on what happened in Tumbler Ridge.
Here's is the @transjournalists.org Style Guide if you are covering this story today

If you want to help Tumbler Ridge from afar, consider donating. Every bit helps: even if you can only afford $5, it’s still like you’re buying a grieving parent a cup of coffee. Which I know a lot of us would do in person if it was our community.
Also, posted these on my site, but posting here, mostly in case media wants to use. Dear media: Rights are as such: I know I am the local reporter but I have been so tied up with media requests and trying to get information out to community, I haven’t been outside in eight hours, so these are the images I have. Everything I know I have posted to my lives on Facebook and later, YouTube. If you want to grab stuff that’s okay, but we are a community funded newspaper. You can use any of this information, if, and only if you pinky promise to make a donation. We have a patreon site, https://www.patreon.com/c/tumblerridgelines I don’t have an easy way for one time donations, but I have this: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/204606215-Can-I-make-a-one-time-payment Images are : A group of worried parents gather outside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School as RCMP investigate inside. The students were soon sent to the nearby community centre to shelter in place there. And RCMP take up position outside a home on Fellers, where two additional bodies were found.

1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.
Hundreds of kids are still detained.
We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵
A comic panel that reads: My Canadian Lovebird is the Canada Goose. With an image of a married goose saying to someone offscreen “Did you just honk at my spouse?!” The other goose looks on in admiration.
Obsessed. Thank you @michellecyca.com @gabrielledrolet.bsky.social and @thenarwhal.ca for this quiz that I will now make absolutely everyone take.

If you are an ugly fish expert (esp this ugly fish) please hit me up! I’d love to interview you.
The front page of the COSEWIC assessment report for the Roundnose Grenadier. This image of the fish looks as though someone surprised a weird little letter opener.
I have a lot of stuff on the go (book coming out, freelance work, book I need to write) which is great! But it means I have not spent enough time with my favourite ugly endangered fish: the Roundnose Grenadier.
And shout out to me for including the wrong Indigo link: www.indigo.ca/en-ca/canada...
This is why copy edits are so important haha
Shout out to @kingsbookstore.bsky.social for re-posting despite my aggressive typo in their name haha. Love my alma mater bookstore!
(Also, if you must buy from Amazon, the book is also available there.)
If you want a signed copy, hit me up and we can figure out a way to make that happen.

It’s hard to believe the time has come already, but you can pre-order my book CANADA’S ENDANGERED ANIMALS for your nature-loving kids (or yourself, I don’t judge).
It’s only $17.95 (less than a child’s average biweekly berry budget) and will be shipped to you in mid-May.

If you hear anything, please share :)
Important update: bumblebee queens choose underground nests based, in part, on whether there is rodent urine present.
The world is full of horrors, but yesterday I got to learn about DNA testing for microscopic worms and today I am going to learn about how blueberry farmers can make better nesting opportunities for bumblebees, so it’s not all bad

Cow tools from the study author. Delightful thread. Plus! video of the talented Veronika, using her tools.
It’s A LOT right now.
I needed to take a breath, maybe you do too?
Perhaps with some of my favorite fishes, right here in Minnesota:
CBC News is adding 33 local journalists and creating 11 new bureaus, increasing its Canadian footprint from 66 to 77 locations.
Many of the new positions are based in Central and Western Canada:
In book-related news, CANADA’S ENDANGERED ANIMALS will not be my only publication. I recently signed with @nimbuspub.bsky.social to start work on CANADA’S ENDANGERED WATERS, another children’s book about endangered marine and freshwater species. Basking shark, roundnose grenadier, and salmon, oh my!
