Smoking brisket and listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Feels like I’m doing something right.

I was skeptical at first, but I’ve started bouncing research ideas off AI during the day.
Honestly? The back-and-forth reminds me of my favorite parts of grad school and I love it.
First faculty senate meeting today
Presented a project I’ve been working on for months with some great colleagues. There’s something oddly satisfying about watching an idea move from “this could be cool” to a room full of faculty senators calling it exciting
Academia is weird and I kind of love it
Caturday.
One way to push back against the use of AI is structuring of assignments. Don’t let folks race to the end (e.g. a final paper). Show me how your thinking is evolving over several assignments.
Hearing Gemini pause and say “um” genuinely changed how I think about AI.
We’ve lived through the transition from issuing precise commands to machines
to conversing with them.
As the interface changed, so did our expectations.
The mean and standard deviation very much have main character energy.
I’m quickly realizing that statistics might be my favorite class to teach.
Absolutely. How could you not if you watch?
Ive been thinking “if they could do *that*, I can do *this*”. Been helping in many aspects of my life, ultimately resulting in more joy across the board.
Some Mondays are easier than others.
Today is very much a “watch spring training baseball and pretend deadlines are a social construct” kind of Monday.
Procrastination needs no further replication.
Two conversations can cover the same topic — and feel completely different.
In one of my favorite papers, we examined how collateral signals (e.g., gestures, inserts) may independently shape judgments of conversational quality.
Not just content, but also delivery.
We learn about people through conversation. Then AI shows up, talks like a human, and we try to read it the same way. It’s easy to forget that it’s just our language reflected back.
Chatting with AI is like chatting with an expert. Smooth interactions reinforce expectations of competence.
When errors do happen (and they do!) they don’t just feel wrong. They feel out of character.
That’s a very social reaction to a non-social system.
That feeling when you show up to class your laptop adapter decided to skip class that day.
😬😬😮💨
College basketball is MAGIC.
The year I spent living in Durham opened my eyes to it.
Camille brings me two boxes of thin mints every year and they’re kept in the freezer. It’s something I always look forward to every year 😂
I have a tiny dial counter thingy in my office that I turn every day I’m in my office and it’s kind of scary how fast time is flying by. I’ve always dreamed of being a professor and here I am doing the thing. Super cool!
After a year and a half of living in Southern California, I’m convinced that everyone just likes to make traffic on the freeways for fun.
Sometimes it’s wild to think about the complexities of conversation.
We get together with all our information and lived experiences, and we make noises at each other, and (sometimes) leave with different information or different relationships with others.
Very happy to share our most recent paper, in which we propose and describe what we call the sociocognitive model of conversations. We believe it provides a holistic approach to studying the complexities of conversation.
Please check it out, it’s open source!

Always something special about campus in the winter time. If you look close enough, you can see some snow capped mountains.

What if there was a superhero who had the superpower of just being really good at conversation? All they’d do was talk to the supervillain and the supervillain would forget all their evil plans.

Who says this can’t be the best Monday of the semester?
Hoping everyone has a great week!
For those who celebrate Thanksgiving, it brings opportunities to catch up with loved ones.
It also means we have to have those dreaded conversations with *that* family member/friend.
What makes those conversations so awkward? Is it content? Is it behavior?

Excellent piece differentiating AI’s language use and human intelligence from @benjaminjriley.bsky.social
AI’s language use is built upon data from the Internet, and repackages this data in the form of relevant (and seemingly interesting) responses. Very different than higher levels of cognition.
Very excited to be joining Bluesky! I’m Andrew and I’m a psychologist studying how we perceive, evaluate, and remember our conversational experiences.
Stoked to be here!
