When people ask why I pack for a 3 day trip to step outside - because these used to be my local buses. Slow? You haven't heard of slow...

And people give *me* funny looks when I say I moved from studying politics to medieval history cos the black death is less depressing than current events.

Yeah, I think what was actually taught varied a fair bit, I don't think it was all that standardised. And I got loads in the scouts about fire safety, in part cos there had been an incident where a kid's uniform caught fire (don't know when, heard story second hand) so they were hypervigilant.

B52's Loveshack I believe is what you're looking for.

Last time I checked, maybe a decade ago, the fire service had an educational arm that'd go out to schools, youth groups and the like, as well as adult education place and taught fire safety *very* regularly. Hell the job centre sent me on one of their courses once.

Well, restored to the curriculum, cos when I was a kid in the UK it was still a standard thing we were taught regularly, not sure of currently but we were both taught and had regular refreshers in the 90s. Don't know (but can guess) why it might not be taught now though.

At least you're not in Australia? I sometimes watch an Australian vet program and the house snakes he periodically has to move are... not fun. When they say everything on that continent wants to kill you, they not wrong as far as I can see.

Yeah, my wife's finding that at the moment. She found out she has fibro a few months ago and acknowledging the pain somehow makes it worse than ignoring it beforehand did.

Tend to call that the suffering olympics because people have a bad habit of treating suffering like a competition sport and like... my dudes, it doesn't work like that?

I understand what he was trying to do with all those other books, lord knows, but that doesn't mean they are readable at all. The best thing the LOTR films did was trim out all the stuff that was interesting to Tolkien and other nerds of that specific type only.

...Yeah. I don't like it cos I like the actual stories told in some of the other books but dear lord, for readability its the hobbit every time. Man could build fantastic worlds and stories but his writing for almost anything that isn't the hobbit is really difficult to read.

My brain's best suggestion is to go regency and call it promenading. But then again, it followed that up with doggy crossfit soooo... use as you wish? My only other idea is basically raid a thesaurus but like, that probably won't keep him busy for too long either.

I am still sad that the local store that sold my favourite dried mano stopped doing them. I do not live in an area where good mango is easy to get hold of in any form so it is extra saddening when one of the few sources is like 'nope'.

To mark International Women's Day, meet Lt Cmdr. Madeleine Barclay. First Officer on HMS Fidelity.

To my knowledge, the first woman to officially serve as First Officer on a Royal Navy vessel deployed on combat duty. Achieving this involved a three-way war between Navy, SOE and the WRNS /1 ๐Ÿงต #IWD

I lack the words to capture it, but ... it's just endlessly remarkable to me that so many people in our society have chosen trans kis -- TRANS KIDS, the smallest, least significant, most vulnerable demographic slice you could possibly pick -- as a repository for all their fears & insecurities.

Also, I'm not sure if it applies in the US but in the UK the word 'Malpractice' is enough to scare the living shit out of most, well anyone, but also knowing the reporting system is 10/10 guaranteed to get a doctor screaming forward to suddenly be helpful. Its a word that ends careers and lives.

of the students could get private tutoring and so the local grammar schools had a somewhat different culture than when it was a national thing, so my experience is much more that of the much smaller numbered current version, which I get the impression vastly improved my experience.

The grammar school i was sent to was specifically chosen for being girls only, ND friendly (a minor miracle at the time) and more to protect me from bullying as none of my school bullies were even trying to get in than solely for any social mobility reasons, but it was the sort of area where none /?

From personal experience, I went to a grammar school more because, in my very poor, low attainment area, grammar school was an effective way of sorting out students who wanted to study and gave us a safer environment to be educationally motivated. This was early 2000s for ref.

From what I know of my cousin's school, the comprehensive with grammar school track was a bit oddball & more like hardline setting because they could move students in and out over their secondary career depending on how well they were doing, but thats just one case I've heard of, so maybe a one off.

From what I know there are variations sprinkled across quite a few counties. In some case some private schools have a state funded grammar school intake, others are just selective intake state schools. Heck there are some comprehensives with grammar school streams baked in.

Also take the numbers under advisement cos I'm not certain I'm right, especially on the empires thing cos, well, Napoleon makes things hard on that front and my memory aint always great.

From what I van tell from French friends, the answer is a *lot* of messy politics, not just one governemnt. Like, look at why its managed 5 republics, 3 empires and a royalty in 200 years (I think). Plus its rapidly moving right wing on certain angles so the authoritarian is creeping in.

Oh yeah. That'd do it.

really tired of conversations about how we need to get people to spend more time offline that don't acknowledge that one of the reasons people ARE online is their access needs aren't being met in physical spaces. This is especially true for queer people and disabled people.
