Software pet peeve: wasting characters and computation by doing 1.4*10**5 instead of 1.4e5
A two-panel figure with hierarchical grouping of important features in massive black hole formation in the left panel and a correlation map in the right panel.
Congratulations to Elizabeth Mone, who just submitted her ApJ paper on massive black hole formation! She is one of the top undergrad researchers I've mentored in my 13 years as faculty. She's applying to astro grad schools this year, so be on the lookout for her application! arxiv.org/abs/2412.08829
Illustration of JWST exploring deep space.
Had a great time at last night's cosmology Asimov Debate at the American Museum of Natural History, featuring @astroahura.bsky.social and @mbkplus.bsky.social along with non-Blueskies Wendy Freedman, Priya Natarajan, and Rachel Somerville. A few thoughts...

A photo of six people β from L to R, Rachel Somerville, me, Priya Natarajan, John Wise, Wendy Freedman, and Neil deGrasse Tyson βdressed up.
Had fun talking about #JWST and its implications for cosmology and galaxy formation at the American Museum of Natural History with @neildegrassetyson.com, @astroahura.bsky.social, Wendy Freedman, Priya Natarajan, and Rachel Somerville. There have been some real surprises and weβve learned a lot! π§ͺ
Nerd alert: Excited that I can run Arch Linux instead of Ubuntu on Windows. I β€οΈ the bleeding edge
Don't worry- I still dual boot

Is it okay to put this in the acknowledgements?
We thank the anonymous referee for insightful comments that helped improve the paper but not for being an ass.

For context, here are the papers and a pretty picture. Looking forward to reading them!

Jesus Christ, Phil, you're on FIRE. Masterpieces every week!
Feels like my postdoc days again when he was publishing several papers a year and we were on the job market together. All is cool now since I've given up writing first author papers π
I love having a small car squeezing into spaces where your typical car / SUV can't
Hey abstract submission is now open for our conference Massive Black Holes in the First Billion Years! Deadline is 17 November to submit! π

I started to swear around the same age but at 43 I still don't swear around my parents π
Our paper on comparing our high-z simulated galaxies to JWST galaxies has been published! It was led by Joe McCaffrey (Maynooth) with the help GT student Samantha Hardin, John Regan, and myself
So I'm playing more Starfield than working these days and look what I saw a few nights ago! WTF is a LIGO sensitivity curve doing there? It's like work is taunting me
Dealing with the disparate timesteps and running it for long enough is the hardest part. I see that y'all had a clever strategy to gradually hyper resolve the system. 10 kyr at the accretion disk level is mighty impressive
When I hear or read the latter I go π internally. I don't know if it's just me but the word just sounds dumb
Who's with me?

Goddamn that's insane. No use competing anymore, all hail FIRE
Look what came in the mail today! I can't wait to see what @sciencevivi.bsky.social can teach me. I teach grad computational physics every spring, so it'll be a great resource for my ML module
You worked at Subway, too? It was my first job at 15
Introduce yourself with some jobs you have done apart from what you do now:
- landscaper
- Subway

It's a joy to be back at KIPAC for their 20th Anniversary Conference, seeing many old faces and hearing about all the exciting science that KIPAC has enabled. Time flies, it's been 16 years since my PhD! Here I am with my advisor Tom Abel and the wonderful Martha Siegel. kipac.stanford.edu/kipac20

Things you see in the Bay Area. Cybertruck's still ugly in person as in the pictures
Got it. Thanks!
Hol up does this count
No stickers for me. I like the clean minimalist look
Do tell. The Ioniq 5 is top on my list. I'd get the 6 if its back wasn't so ugly
