I work fairly closely with the grant-witness team. Good humans and an impressive array of skill sets.
I always feel like a complete data science amateur during our calls.
When my kids were brand new, 14 years ago, the other moms I found myself online with were about 50% antivax. 3 moms in that group created a community to encourage vaccination with facts and compassion, and I watched a dozen women or more change their minds and get their kids on a catch-up schedule.
It's crazy to me how the papers that get published today could easily have been 3 or 4 papers even a decade or two ago. The amount of information they are saturated with is intense.
i had a great conversation with this reporter and overall feel this is a really balanced piece exploring what might be going on with this shift to "first person or bust" that has taken over romance.
Anti-birth control ads have started popping into my feeds this week. And I can't help but laugh when I hear them promoting the same "natural family planning" methods that led my Catholic grandmother to get pregnant 12 times in 18 years.

The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted.
What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards.
Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.

Their headline conclusion is that 67% of Americans have confidence in career scientists working at US federal health agencies whereas only 43% have confidence in their leaders. Furthermore, 62% of Americans trust NIH to be a source of trustworthy public health information now compared to 75% in February 2024 (after the COVID pandemic but before you became NIH Director).

I worked in public health for a long time - in fact doing mass vaccination clinics - and between “we need to meet people where they’re at” and “look at these fucking idiots, we should shun them,” only the former will reach anyone. Public health is as much about harm reduction as anything.
Some days I want to do a masters in family and consumer science so that I can have a class where I teach kids how to budget and sew.
Kind of disappointed now that I know what Shield of America is...
