The most FRUSTRATING thing is asking for honest feedback and getting a one line "looks great" answer back.

I forget who said it but honest, substantial feedback is a fucking GIFT.

Along with hiring graphic designers and illustrators (it's fire sale prices) there are many tools to help you provide your own illustrations for scientific graphics. I'll drop a few here in 🧡 #ScienceSky πŸ§ͺ
You can find illustrators via the many many amazing posts of #SciArt feed.

At ~$1 billion/day, the US has spent as much on the war in Iran in ten days as the entire FY25 budget for the National Science Foundation ($10 billion).

Trump's FY26 budget request for the agency declined to $3.9 billion, due to a "realignment of resources in a constrained fiscal environment."

How Congress can restore the independence of US science Members must go beyond reinstating US government research spending and re-establish decentralized governance at the National Institutes of Health and other agencies.

The most impt change at #NIH and to US science this year is bigger than grant cancellationsβ€” it’s how the agency is governed.

For 75 years NIH has been largely independent of presidential control. That’s changed this year. New piece from me and @nataliebaviles.bsky.social in @nature.com

"Just after starting on Cars 2, I was told by a superior that I would be uninvited from all weekly art department meetings because Lasseter 'has a hard time controlling himself' around young women... It was clear that the institution was working hard to protect him, at the expense of women like me."

I work fairly closely with the grant-witness team. Good humans and an impressive array of skill sets.

I always feel like a complete data science amateur during our calls.

When my kids were brand new, 14 years ago, the other moms I found myself online with were about 50% antivax. 3 moms in that group created a community to encourage vaccination with facts and compassion, and I watched a dozen women or more change their minds and get their kids on a catch-up schedule.

It's crazy to me how the papers that get published today could easily have been 3 or 4 papers even a decade or two ago. The amount of information they are saturated with is intense.

i had a great conversation with this reporter and overall feel this is a really balanced piece exploring what might be going on with this shift to "first person or bust" that has taken over romance.

Anti-birth control ads have started popping into my feeds this week. And I can't help but laugh when I hear them promoting the same "natural family planning" methods that led my Catholic grandmother to get pregnant 12 times in 18 years.

Graph of award probability of R35 and R01 from NIH factbook as a function of review rank percentile. As is apparent, 2025 is a significant departure, with lower award probabilities at all scores <40 and significant departures from norm, where even being in the top 10% is no longer a nearly certain indicator of success.

The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted.

What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards.

Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.

I hope you will look at these data carefully and think about steps that you, now a leader at two of the agencies, could do to help.

Their headline conclusion is that 67% of Americans have confidence in career scientists working at US federal health agencies whereas only 43% have confidence in their leaders. Furthermore, 62% of Americans trust NIH to be a source of trustworthy public health information now compared to 75% in February 2024 (after the COVID pandemic but before you became NIH Director).

And, if you'd like to come sign the petition, we'll have people at the following locations tomorrow (Saturday):

Princeton (10am-5pm): in front of the Garden Theatre
Montgomery (11am-3pm): at Kasia Korean/Asian market

By the way, both of these are great places to visit in NJ12!

I worked in public health for a long time - in fact doing mass vaccination clinics - and between β€œwe need to meet people where they’re at” and β€œlook at these fucking idiots, we should shun them,” only the former will reach anyone. Public health is as much about harm reduction as anything.
