Question for folks with direct experience—What is the going rate for freelance tech editing of patterns in the arts and crafts field? I’m particularly interested in weaving, but it seems that knitting, sewing, and crochet could be comparable.

Hand-dyed cotton warp being woven with a Shetland will weft. Being woven doubleweave double-width on an AVL loom.
I am sitting within the loom threading the heddles.
The completed blanket on a bed with a pair of matching pillows from the same warp.
A big sigh of relief. I just finished up my largest handwoven blanket to date, coming in at a finished size of 71”x 102”. Maybe not the most complex structure, but definitely the my most challenging for me so far. Woven double-width in a hand-dyed warp.

I feel like it should also be noted that the 16.33% added on to the consumer price in this graphic seems like best case scenario. For smaller manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers the mark up often has to be much, much, much more than this.

I post on IG so infrequently these days that I immediately get suspicious of any new account that follows me there. I just assume it’s all bots or humanoids up to no good. Also, it’s funny to me that now may be the time that someone would finally decide to open an account.

A small doubleweave cotton warp woven in a checkerboard design. Experimenting with sett and some Leno and Brooks bouquet. Part of the warp ends have been cut to reveal the under layer.
I’ll love sampling and messing around with ideas—with no pressure for perfection or a lovely finished item.

Hi! I don’t have experience with a rope brake like this, but the setup looks very similar to the tension brakes that are on looms like Leclercs and Schachts. It may be helpful to take a look at those to get a better idea.

My general rule is to wet finish the fabric before cutting in the same method that you plan on washing the finished object. Remember that water + agitation + soap is how you felt wool. So if that’s not the type of finish you’re going for proceed with extreme caution if putting into the machine.

I’m selling at a fine art and craft show this weekend have had two people come up to me to talk about how annoying it is that the @newyorktimeshaiku.bsky.social Spelling Bee doesn’t accept “heddle” as a word. I’ve also noticed it and it’s super annoying.

Hand-dyed cotton and silk scarves being woven on an AVL loom in deflected doubleweave. Light shines in through a window on the side of the loom.
This afternoon I got to email a few pictures to the kind man I bought this loom from a few months ago. It was Catherine’s, his late wife, and he was looking forward to seeing it back in action and setup in its new home. All looms has a story. 💗

I just received a very polite message that essentially said “Hi! I love your work and am trying to copy it, but am having trouble. Can you help me?” 🫠

Silk and hand-dyed cotton deflected doubleweave scarf on the loom with a pair of boat shuttles sitting atop.
Boot treads in the snow. The pattern looks similar to the center pattern of the woven cloth.
Maybe I just see weaving patterns everywhere, but I couldn’t help but to notice that my boot print in the snow looks like what I’m weaving this afternoon.

My son just asked what I would choose if I could be any object or thing, not an animal, for 3 hours and was guaranteed to turn back into myself and be conscious of the experience. I think a redwood tree by the coast. He would be a bike of a rider practicing for the Red Bull Rampage.

🤷🏻♀️ who knows. It was maybe five years ago that they told me that so maybe it’s changed since then.

A herringbone scarf woven in cotton 70’s stripes
Herringbone wool scarf woven with a blue warp and plum weft.
An overshot wool scarf with blue ground cloth and cream pattern weft.
A cream and plum herringbone scarf just after having its fringe cut with a rotary blade on a cutting mat.
Some student’s work from the class I taught this weekend. Everyone dressed their looms on Saturday and went home with a completed scarf by Sunday afternoon. It was a bit of a marathon, but everyone did a fantastic job and were very focused.

It’s all a mess and part of the kicker is too that I believe Brassard uses a lot of American grown cotton for their house line. At least they were several years ago when I asked.

I’ve spent at least 30 hours prepping for a weekend class for which I’ll get paid for only the 16 class hours. Thankfully all of that work will be done the next time I may teach this class, but it’s also the reason why I don’t/can’t develop too many new and different classes.

A scarf of cream wool with black borders woven in overshot. The edges have been hemstitched with twisted fringe.
The scarf that was being woven yesterday. I designed it for newer weavers to get a taste of weaving overshot without getting overwhelmed by the slower nature of two-shuttle weaving. Could have used a pressing before taking pictures.

I just got an email from @mohelaofficial.bsky.social (fed student loan servicer) today saying that there had been a change to my auto pay payment. Tried to log in to the site only to find that apparently it’s flipping out. I can’t log on and it’s acting like they have no record of my account. 😖

An overshot pattern being woven on a table loom sits in front of a window. The weaving draft is taped to the pot of a winter cactus.
A close up picture of a 4-shaft overshot pattern being woven with a cream ground cloth and a black wool pattern weft.
This morning I’ve been sitting by this sunny window weaving a class sample for an upcoming beginner weaving workshop. I’m sure this winter cactus never imagined that it would be used as a draft holder.

The Handweaver’s Pattern Dictionary by Anne Dixon is my favorite beginner pattern book. It’s full of a great variety of 4-shaft patterns.
