The taxes I actually agree with. The feds heavily subsidize gas, even while taxing it. It’ll never change tho, b/c gas prices are a tangible, easily understood rep of daily costs for most people & massively inc it would literally cause riots.

Some Americans, sure. The vast majority of us can’t afford that, though, unless we live in the middle of Bumfuck, Nowhere, where the closest restaurant/grocery store/gas station is an hour’s drive away. If I didn’t have to go into the office, I’d almost never go more than 5 miles from home.

Also, public transit outside of those same major cities is abysmal. I figured it out once: to get from where I lived then to my work, I’d have to get on the 1st bus at 6am, change buses MULTIPLE times, & still not get to work until 8:30 at absolute earliest. Vs 15 min drive.

As racist as that sounds, any place other than a few select major cities, that’s basically true. White ppl tend to not use public transit b/c it’s seen as “for poor people” & a lot of white ppl *desperately* want to avoid thinking that they’re poor.

Sounds about right. On the days I have to go into the office, it’s about 55mi round trip. Used to do that 5 days a week until the pandemic.

Something to keep in mind is that the USA spans an entire continent that’s larger than Europe. Our individual states are about the size of or larger than your entire countries. How often do you drive 2 countries away to visit? It is NOT a common trip here.

Oh wow. You’re making some massive assumptions there, friendo. Trips that length are NOT common at all. Basically, anything that’s more than a 2-hour drive away aren’t common. My family live about 1200 miles (~1900 km, I think?) away and I haven’t visited them in 6 or 7 years because it’s too far.

There was a recent Senate bill to get rid of it, but I think the time they chose to keep was the incorrect one where noon WASN’T when the sun was highest in the sky. Never made it to a vote in the House.

IIRC, it was created in WW2 to save electricity during the daytime. It’s remained as a relic ever since. It has a *measurable negative impact* on national productivity for weeks both times per year. There is literally no reason for it nowadays.

Made me think, tho: given how bad my symptoms were before I got meds decades ago & my neurochemistry has only ever worsened, I actively fear what I’d be like if I stopped them.

It’s like the whole “Jesus died for our sins” thing is that he died to pay for the original sin that expelled Adam & Eve from Eden. He gave us a clean slate to start with. It doesn’t mean that the sins we accumulate are magically erased by saying the magic words as you’re dying.

No, the thing is that one of the core aspects of this stripe of Xianity is that they both worship AND FEAR death. It’s why they want the Rapture so bad: so they can go to Heaven w/o dying first. Death to the ppl who they don’t like & eternal forgiveness & salvation w/o dying for them.

Their faith, such as it is, is rooted entirely in fear. God the Father is a cruel one, Jesus is reimagined as White Supremacist Jesus, magic words will absolve you of any evil you’ve ever done w/o needing to change, and a fear & worship of death is central. They WANT the destruction of the Rapture…

US policy re: Middle East & Israel makes perfect sense once you know that a large, politically connected number of fundamentalist evangelicals believe that Israel *MUST* exist so that it can be destroyed when the Rapture happens & they need to hasten it so they don’t have to die to go to Heaven

If all your news intake is from the Big 4 Broadcasters (ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC) whether by choice, inertia, or you get shit internet, then you’re going to believe what they tell you even if it’s not your politics. And I think there are a lot more Terminally Offline ppl than Terminally Online.

There’s also a strong tendency for heavily online people (like most politicians, ALL news/opinion media, and most of the left-wing base) to assume that *everyone* is online with access to alternate media sources. My mom is in her early 70s and only watches cable. Only email & FB online.
