New Jersey is a great place to live! We can make it even better - but we need revenue to do that.

Money set aside to help fund clean energy should go toward just that β€” clean energy!

"The Clean Energy Fund should be spent on building more clean energy and making energy more affordable for all New Jerseyans, especially those already struggling with higher bills,” said @alexfromnj.bsky.social.

"Additions require subtractions."

It's true that governments need to balance budgets.

But cuts are not the only way! Schools, health care, transportation -- they're funded through TAXATION.

Billionaires and big biz have enriched themselves at our expense. Taxation can get that money back to NJ

The Governor's first budget proposal confronts the difficult fiscal reality NJ finds itself in.

It prioritizes families and key programs like schools and pensions.

BUT the goal of expanding opportunity will mean giving families more supports, building stronger govt programs, and taxing the rich.

So beyond disappointing to hear Governor @mikiesherrill.bsky.social talk about affordability and opportunity but make no mention of our most vulnerable populations - immigrants, incarcerated or formerly incarcerated people, and their children. And poverty? Did not hear that word once.

It's true that NJ and states need more tools to claw back the wealth that has been extracted from our state by big tech CEOs.

But the most powerful tool at our disposal is taxation, ensuring that companies cannot escape their responsibilities by hiding behind shell companies and paper losses

We don’t need to cut to add new programs or expand existing ones.

We can close more corporate loopholes to make sure the wealthiest companies in the world are paying their fair share.

Government CAN keep us safe from the harms of AI, especially from the economic and environment harm of data centers.

We need to start charging these companies more for their energy use, require them to report on their energy and water use, AND require them to build more clean energy.

New Jersey Should Reject Unjustified Giveaways to Sports Teams and Big Business - New Jersey Policy Perspective Testimony from Senior Policy Analyst Peter Chen opposing the expansion of tax subsidies that benefit private corporations and individuals.

Gov Sherrill rightly points out the skyrocketing expansion of corporate tax breaks ($2.5B) in the lame duck legislature.

As I pointed out at the time, these expansions will hurt future budget years.

Glad to hear the Gov voice the need for a better budget process

Reducing the income cap and benefit amount of Stay NJ saves money and ensures that wealthy homeowners are not disproportionately benefiting.

This was our proposal from last year. Looks pretty similar, with some differences (Sherrill proposal has higher income cap $250k and lower benefit cap $4k)

I agree with @mikiesherrill.bsky.social. Surveillance is a HUGE problem. I cannot wait to get to work on limiting access to our data - but hope we will also focus on protecting the privacy of vulnerable populations

A note on the corporate tax loopholes:
- it was clear at the time that big corporations would exploit the "net operating losses" (NOL) claims to reduce their future tax liabilities, and they ended up avoiding billions in taxes

and a reminder that if a certain previous administration didn’t try to cancel the repairs for the Hudson tunnels, which have been needed since SUPERSTORM SANDY, we’d be much further along.

Dealing with the Portal North Bridge stuff has been a HUGE pain in the ass β€” for me personally as well as statewide.

But it’s like eating our vegetables. Once it’s over, we’ll be one step closer to an actual modern transit system that offers RELIABLE service!

Really excited to see Gov Sherrill’s plans to make it easier to build more housing of all types, including for low-income families.

NJ especially needs transit-oriented development. People want to live in walkable communities with easy and safe access to transit!

Why Are New Jersey's Electricity Bills Going Up, and What Does PJM Have to Do With It? - New Jersey Policy Perspective The primary reason your rates are going up is because of an organization you’ve likely never heard of: PJM.

PJM is seriously holding back our ability to build new, affordable energy to drive down costs for everyone.

Every New Jerseyan benefits from projects like the Gateway tunnel that will provide more reliable transit.

When more people take transit, we have less traffic, cleaner air, and safer roads.

Grateful that Gov Sherrill fought for that funding to be released!

Gov. Sherrill is giving her first budget address and the NJPP team is watching along!

It’s true that previous administrations kicked the can down the road regarding the budget. Just look at NJ Transit β€” overly relying on fare box revenue and federal funding nearly led to massive service cuts.

Lowering the income cap for Stay NJ won't just help save the state money β€” it'll make the program more equitable too.

All joking aside, this is a HUGE win for New Jersey.

The bridge needs to be replaced; that fact was never in question. But now it will be replaced with a more affordable version that won’t increase traffic and pollution for nearby communities!

Let’s be clear: running short on revenue does not mean lawmakers have to cut anything.

We can raise more revenue by making sure the wealthiest corporations aren’t exploiting tax loopholes. That makes New Jersey more affordable for ALL.
