Long-range enhancers more sensitive to regulatory proteins than short-range enhancers
Genes regulated by long-range enhancers are more sensitive to disturbances of regulatory protein levels than those regulated by short-range enhancers.
What do long-range enhancers need to regulate genes? Researchers from the De Laat group have found that long-range enhancers require optimal regulatory protein levels, in addition to the specific protein complex cohesin, to switch on genes.

Forced linear enhancer proximity can reactivate developmentally silenced globin genes in the β-globin and α-globin locus. This work assigns function to non-regulatory sequences in our genome and highlights the relevance of enhancer promoter distance. Del2Rec might offer therapeutic potential.
