My current reading material. Looks to be an interesting read. And I just finished A rage in Harlem by Chester Himes, which I can wholeheartedly recommend to all mystery and history lovers.

A science fiction story is any story that could not be told if it were not a science fiction story.

A great day for my inbox, a unique history of San Francisco, and the new novel by Alvaro Enrique-which I started today, and is excellent so far.

I recommend Blackwells bookshop as a good place to order it. I really want to have this available to sell in the US. It would immediately be one of my staff favorites in the store. I’ve emailed the publisher to ask if there is a plan for US distribution. (I also asked if arcs are available for 2/3

I just finished Pagans by @jamesbluecat.bsky.social . Absolutely incredible. My favorite police procedural that I’ve read recently, and one of my favorite alternative history books. Good news is there’s a sequel coming, no ETA that I can find. At the moment, it’s only available in the UK.

As someone who roots for Ireland in six nations, it pains me to say that France looks unstoppable this year.

AT LAST! Democrats HIRE this woman! The rich ninnies who think they can restore 6000 years of dismally stoopid feudalism by crushing the people and the fact professions are only summoning rides on Uber-Tumbrels.

I’m currently reading The death of Trotsky by Josh Ireland. Although it’s non fiction it reads like thriller. @radiofreetom.bsky.social , if you don’t already know about this, it seems right up your alley.

I would love to see Tom Waits hosting a Muppets show. The image of him and Miss Piggy duetting I never talk to strangers won’t leave my mind.

I just finished Palaces of the crow by Ray Nayler-advance copy, it drops on May 19th. An incredible book. Whatever I could say about it, still would not do it justice, or even hint at the wonders in its pages. It’s only February, but this may be my favorite fiction title read in 2026

I used to work with a classics major. When we were dream casting our Iliad and Odyssey, we had Samuel L Jackson as Zeus, and Salma Hayek as Hera. (This was a decade ago.)

The grand medieval bestiary

I normally don’t buy a lot of art books, but I couldn’t pass up this one. There are essays and illustrations of one hundred different animals. A wonderful addition to my medieval history. @lollardfish.bsky.social , if you don’t already know about this, it seems right up your alley.

At the dances I was one of the most untiring and gayest. One evening a cousin of Sasha [Alexander Berkman, Goldman s lover], a young boy, took me aside. With a grave face, as if he were about to announce the death of a dear comrade, he whispered to me that it did not behoove an agitator to dance... My frivolity would only hurl the Cause. I grew furious at the impudent interference of the boy. I told him to mind his own business, I was tired of having the Cause constantly thrown into my face. I did not believe that a Cause which stood for a beautiful ideal, for anarchism, for release and freedom from conventions and prejudice, .should demand the denial of life and joy... If it meant that, I did not want it.

If anything is certain about hungry people in Glasgow late at night it’s that they’ll go into anywhere open and try to buy chips. Most other places would have added them to the menu but the Canton just laminated a sign to the counter that said WE DO NOT SELL CHIPS so the staff could point to it
