CBC News further expands local journalism, bureaus
Historic investment in local journalism comes at critical moment, with local news in steep decline in Canada

This year, CBC News will add 33 local journalists and create 11 new bureaus, increasing its Canadian footprint from 66 to 77 locations. (Evan Mitsui/CBC)
Amidst a hellscape for journalism and specifically local journalism, CBC seems to be the only major news outlet that's actually *expanding* its local journalism with 11 new bureaus this year.

Currently in my third week in France with my daughters. This trip is a graduation present for my oldest, but I'm understanding why writer's retreats are a thing. We are staying in a Paris suburb and it's so tranquil. Every day the singing birds wake me up & I watch the flowers bloom a little more.

Had a lot to do today, so I pulled all the stuff off of my shelves and clean them … and my desk, and under my bed… The actual todo list hasn’t changed.

I shared a version of this yesterday (different art) but as I get older, this is more and more true. Feed the body, feed the soul.

Self promotion... this is my website, but learning about intuitive eating (from a dietician) was really an important step in learning to love myself as I come. It's an ongoing journey but I'm getting there.

The leaves on the lilac tree outside my window sound like paper crumpling as they fall. I'm reminded of how beautiful it is to let go.
"Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree."

I'm in the process of transferring to @thestorygraph.com and it's really great. It's quicker to use and less cluttered. You can upload your GoodReads history so you aren't really losing anything. Excited to inch away from Amazon.

If anyone’s looking for alternatives to GoodReads, I highly recommend StoryGraph. It’s owned by a black woman, and the platform is so much more accessible and easy to use.

I'm in a zone! Sending pitches and queries, outlining story ideas, increasing word count ... Shouldn't jinx it, but still...

Some of our local libraries are doing innovative other loans like an apply press, radon detector, and themed cake pans. Love libraries

I'm having a moment where I feel like my new WIP is a book that I need to finish reading. And I'm thrilled that the story is captivating (to me anyway) and also annoyed that I have to keep working on it to find out how it ends.

#Reading "Becoming Wild: Living the Primitive Life on a West Coast Island" by Nikki van Schyndel and it's a fun read so far. Lots of parallels and many extremes to my own life.

“Write scenes” is some of my most helpful writing advice this year. Often, I’ve had ideas for stories with key scenes but I’ll get caught getting to later scenes. Write scenes, connect them later.

If you haven’t read Richard Wagamese’s “Ragged Company” you really should.
“I gave them nothing back because all I knew was the vast amount they had taken from me, robbed me of, cheated me out of, all in the name of a God whose son bore the long hair none of us were allowed to wear any more.”

Just like any other skill, the more you do it, the easier it gets. I've had a very liberating summer with my writing and turned out some scenes and phrases that I'm really proud of. I've also found that my creative flow is more enhanced.
Anyway, my musings...

Learning to free write without self correcting and allowing yourself to pen a story without doubting yourself or self correcting is skill development.

I've been hand writing with fountain pens at the library — no devices. What I've come to realize is that the "write every day" advice is not a rule, it's craft development.

Writing advice often comes in the form of "write every day" or "write x amount of words a day" or some sort of structure. This works for some, doesn't work for others. That's all ok.

I've been thinking about daily writing and writing routines. I have a mind that gets trapped in a "I should do, I don't do, I'm a failure" cycle so whenever I've tried to set a writing "routine" I've failed and then felt dejected.
