i've been reading leguin's Always Coming Home, an anthropological exploration of a totally fictional culture, and also have been really into studying katsuya terada's work. so i'm combining those interests. i want to do at least a few of these, following a day in troll culture.

My Grandma loved plants - when she immigrated here she brought some plant roots (never go anywhere without!). A true talent - amazing with African violets and cacti of all kind <3

Her house was full of them. She also had no yard - just garden.

I wasn’t even aware that there were roses when I first moved in - they had pruned it back to the stump - it was water leaking from my AC unit that brought the ramblin’ red back.

The owners prior to me were huge on dumping weed killer on the lawn. Every peony bush was heavily blighted from mildew.

It’s taken me four years now, but I’ve finally undone that damage. The soil was so compacted that I had to go out and walk around on spiky shoes to help oxygenate it.

I’m very excited to see the full potential of that red rose now that it’s in a better spot.

I’m also excited to no longer hit the .5” long thorns on this bastard when I’m using the outdoor hose (it was planted right in front of the spigot)

Pruned rose bush and root ball - I found the patent tag while pulling this bush out: ramblin’ red climber. It was a dead stump when I first moved in, and came back sickly. It should do a LOT better on the sunny side of the house with a trellis to climb. This bush maxes out at a size of 10’ tall and 6’ wide!

My colossal pink wild rose - my mom brought the parent plant with her as she moved around - this is a smaller piece of the parent… there’s a lack of scale here, but the root ball is the size of my torso. A LOT of those roots are thicker than my thumbs. At my mom’s house it was next to the garage - a 50/50 for sun… I planted it next to my garage and it’s been blighted. Not enough wind passing through. It is also now on the sunnier side of my house. Hoping to get strong blooms a year or two from now.

The patent tag for my ramblin’ red climber. It was a mystery rose bush so this is a massive boon to have - I now know how to properly care for this plant, and hope to coax the full size out of her now. Ramblin’ Red was patented in 2003, so 20 years have passed and I can asexually reproduce this plant. :)

What have I been up to? A LOT of work, studying security engineering, and garden planning.

Yesterday I moved two row bushes that weren’t doing too hot in my yard - hopefully they’ll do a lot better in full sun.

My mystery red rose that came with the house is a Ramblin’ Red climber.
