What is this warmth that commeth from the sky? Have the heavens been set on fire?

This is a good start. The whole conversation should be framed around student achievement and how investments support that. And thy should start this dialogue in the fall, not just during budget season.

But the discussion is never about achievement and maximizing student success. It is always about admin vs teaching money. That is our Groundhog Day argument. I’d love to see us break out of that cycle.

Every year this budget dance is the same…has been for decades and every year we miss the larger point that Arlington and Fall Church spend more per pupil than we do and have significantly fewer kids with a need for more robust support. We should be spending more per pupil than them.

Saw Scream7 with my middle daughter. Horror movies are a thing we do together and we have watched this whole series. It lived up to expectations. Fun times. Can’t wait for 8

lol. That is fair. I’ve been looking at this stuff for a while as it is very prominent in my therapy work. I admit that post wasn’t the best vehicle to “go off”

Let the kids smoke. We don’t know enough yet to stop them.

This is needed. But we also need kids to not have them at home. They are distracting kids while doing homework, they are interfering with basic social skill development, and thy are having a negative impact on family dynamics.

But algorithms that actually harm people, esp kids, seem problematic? We have age limits on movies.

I would not underestimate the damage we are doing to people with this stuff. I think it is red alert stage. Other countries are acting fast. We are twirling our hair and saying it just seems to hard to do anything.

I agree we need more control over the algorithm, but I just don’t believe that will ever be enough. My dream is a social network that uses psychology to help people instead of harm them.

I think age limits are the easy place to start. Kids can still have a computer at home to find friends and connect, but carrying around a device designed to suck their attention has huge social, health, and academic consequences.

We know phones and social media are causing cognitive declines and mental health issues. So….where is the action. Kids under 18 should not have smart phones.

I just don’t buy that Open AI found a way to avoid US surveillance or autonomous killing but Anthropic couldn’t. Something isn’t mathing.

On the same day Wall Street seems to be starting to figure out that AI efficiency equals lost consumption and less buying power in the economy we learn that the US Dept of War wants its AI partners to let it use autonomous AI weapons. Are we living the prequel to the Star Wars series?

I have genuinely liked turning 55. Watch out world.

So the president has been doing something that most folks knew was illegal for about a year. The Supreme Court just confirmed that and the majority party in the Congress and Senate just did nothing for the past year?

People are not thinking big or fast enough. Unless, of course, all the billionaires building bunkers right now is telegraphing the reality. They will be fine, and everybody else will be trapped.

Exactly. Oh, it may be a bit inconvenient for some, but look at all the money others will make seems to be missing the point that those others can’t make money if jobs collapse and there is no way for people to find employment. We need a manhattan project for the worldwide economic impact of AI.
