A label printing joke.

A label printing joke.

I've shared this before, but it always makes me laugh. The pettiness of the joke.

The interface is a bit clunky but as a game to teach the mechanics of cryptic clues, it’s a pretty cool idea

A year already? And what a year it has been for you indeed - congratulations!

It's a toss-up between "mid celebrity goes abroad" and "people doing their job" for me. Closely followed by the Channel Five speciality, "thinly disguised advert for big brand passed off as documentary"

I was thinking of Tom Swiftys! I thought of you because I was sure it was something that came up in the Masterclass so I checked my notes to find it... Not quite the same thing, but close-ish

Yes, that crossed my mind after I posted…

It’s Bernard Righton!

I meant the punning definition of oddly, obviously

Broadly agree but think β€œstreet, oddlyβ€œ does work after a fashion if you’re prepared to accept the punning definition of street - ”He walked down the street, oddly” - there’s a name for this kind of wordplay but can’t recall it right now (@boatmancryptics.co.uk will know)

Should have guessed the first one too - there are enough clues in the picture!

Ah yes, one of them is from a Dario Argento film that I haven't seen but I correctly guessed the most likely title... πŸ˜‚

Same here - I recognise where the redhead and Clint pics are from. Can probably guess the other two...

As a professional military strategist, I just wanted to make sure everyone has a full understanding of the American strategy in Iran, thank you for your attention to this matter

V interesting. I do set myself reading targets but purely for self-motivation not competition. I'm sceptical of anyone who styles themselves 'booktok influencer' but he mentions Rejection by Tony Thuliamutte as a 2025 favourite and that was one of my faves of last year too. Fantastic book!

Hallelujah! I tried to ditch GR a while ago (as part of ditching Amazon) and switched to Hardcover, but it's very clunky and missing too many books, so went back to GR... First impressions of @thestorygraph.com are very positive - looks like I've found the GR replacement I was after!

Oxford English Dictionary - Wikipedia

Basically the complete second edition in a single volume. It was published in 1991, before the World Wide Web revered such madness obsolete…

Don’t want to turn this into a who’s got the biggest dic(tionary) contest but… this was a bargain book club purchase many years ago. Came as a box set with a user guide and a magnifying glass. Chambers included for scale
