It is intensely depressing and tiring trying to be a part of nerd culture and community as a marginalised person.
It especially feels like there are not enough good people in nerd fandoms. So many of them are invaded by bigots who cry so loudly when they don't get their way that they drown out everything else.

And I know those people are a loud and entitled minority, it's just hard not to feel a bit defeated in this situation. Sometimes it feels like we don't have enough good, thoughtful and empathetic people in this world anymore.
What's the point of trying to do something unique and interesting if people are just going to harass and hate you for it? What's the point of making art, especially as a progressive black African, when everything will just be viewed through the lens of western culture war bullshit?
But instead of being judged on it's own merits, Relooted will be remembered by many, especially by unaware and neutral players, as the topic of the month for culture war grifters whose only stake in the game is their hatred of people like me. I can't lie, it is quite is disencouraging.
I think Relooted is a very interesting idea by a local studio I respect quite a bit. So much so, I bought it day 1 even when I couldn't play it immediately. And it's not like I was expecting the game to make a gazillion dollars, it's a non-western indie puzzle game with a strong political theme.
It has always bothered me that these bigots hijack discourse online and push marginalised identities out of nerd spaces, but it just hits too close to home both physically and emotionally to see these same bad faith critics becoming the loudest voices speaking on Relooted specifically.

I had hoped that they would forget about the game by the time of release. But lo and behold, I searched for the game on Reddit, and the top results are either from fans of Asmongold, a man who's personal hygiene is so wretched to the point of satire,
But that excitement was quickly tempered by the attention the game started receiving from reactionary western audiences. Before the game even had anything to show, there was all of this vitriol thrown at it.
I'm a South African aspiring game dev, and from personal experience, the gaming industry here is quite small. So when I heard one of our bigger studios was doing a new game about repatriation of items stolen from Africa by colonialists and hoarded in western museums, of course I was excited.
What I'm speaking about here is how this game has become just another culture war talking point, and how frustrating that is.
This is not about defending the game's quality, I haven't played it YET (I definitely will), but ultimately the quality never mattered since the backlash started WAY before release.
I need to vent real quick. The bigoted backlash to Relooted genuinely depresses me.

I didn't expect @nyamakop.co.za's RELOOTED to be so educational, love it!
There's such rich history in this game that I have never known about, some of it leaning into some very dark (but important) historical territory. My Twitch chat and I were having some heavy conversations about this today.
There is something extremely satisfying about setting up and pulling off a heist in Relooted.

but that becomes null and void when anyone can simply republish your work wholesale without having to use your name on it. You could say that someone wouldn't do that under communism without profit incentive, but profit incentive does not explain all human behaviour, just aggregated behaviour.
