The gas industry found a goldilocks zone: Make large swaths of the population dependent on it, have the gov subsidize it so it's cheap enough that folks don't feel bad buying it, but if it's too expensive, suburbanites will vote for those who promise lower prices.

If USians payed European prices for gas, it would cripple suburbia. We need to build an “off ramp” first.

Gas is cheap enough to enable suburban life, and suburban life depends on gas, so it’s political. Many of my suburban friends wish they weren’t car dependent, but they couldn’t afford to live near transit.

Unfortunately for many, car dependency isn’t a choice. Suburban life is subsidized, and property near transit hubs is expensive. Auto and gas execs lobbied politicans to secure their profits. And this forces folks into a debt spiral.

With TJs coming and Congress Theater getting restored, demand and property values for that area of Logan are gonna rise.

We must build more housing. There are so many empty lots.

I wonder which amount is more: money spent downtown by folks with email jobs who are forced to commute for “office culture”,

Or, money spent dealing with car crashes and highway maintenance due to those commuters.

If they follow the speed limit and don’t run red lights or stop signs, could be nice? Will non-drivers be safer with these on the road? Will it yield to people crossing 4-lane roads at unsigned zebra crossings?

Just incase you needed more reasons to ride a bike in Logan Square, the traffic in this area is going to get worse.

I was biking inbound last night at 5:45 on Milwaukee through insane traffic to get to the @bscactionfund.org social. The inbound Kennedy was shut down due to a shooting that had happened earlier that day, which caused traffic chaos elsewhere in the area.
