With Threats on The Horizon, World AIDS Day Is Still a Call to Action
Jason Rosenberg reflects on how far we have come in the fight to eradicate AIDSโand what we have to lose.
For #WorldAIDSDay, I wrote for @vogue.com.web.brid.gy about what weโre up against these next four years and how we should refuse to acquiesce. Between persisting inequities and an AIDS denialist nominee, weโve got our work cut out for usโso letโs get to it. www.vogue.com/article/worl...

Might the analog experience of cruising combat sexโs domination by the apps and the gentrification of queer life?
โWithin the hostility of the default world, cruising carves out a space within a space, a temporary channel through which one can find others.โ

How can oral history interviews between different generations of LGBTQ+ people aid our understanding of the ongoing impact of Section 28?
21 years ago, in November 2003, Section 28 was repealed.
From the HW archive: how can oral history interviews between different generations of LGBTQ+ people aid our understanding of the ongoing impact of Section 28?

The front cover for the book Men and Masculinities in Modern Britain: A History for the Present. The cover is a photograph of a smartly dressed young man smoking a cigarette which was probably taken in the late-1930s.
The most recent of these - co-edited with Katie Jones and Ben Mechen - was published open access by Manchester University Press earlier this year: Men and Masculinities in Modern Britain: A History for the Present.

A map made in the late-1930s that depicts housing conditions in Seven Dials, London. The map has been cut out so it is the shape of the neighbourhood.
My third book Songs of Seven Dials: An Intimate History of London in the 1920s and 1930s will be published as part of MUP's trade series next autumn.
Like the title suggests, it's a new history of the 1920s and 1930s - told through the stories of a place and its people.

The cover of Matt Houlbrook's book Queer London which is a photograph of two men framed by an arch looking out on Piccadilly Circus in the London fog late at night.
My first book Queer London: Perils and Pleasures in the Sexual Metropolis, 1918-57 explored how modern urban culture and markets in property, leisure, and labour shaped queer lives and communities between the Great War and the 1950s.

Orange cover with pink-hued naked torso of a man for a book titled The Male Gazed; On Hunks Heartthrobs and What Pop Culture Taught Me About Desiring Men by Manuel Betancourt.
Purple cover with pink lettering and a photo of a shirtless man looking longingly at the camera; book is titled Hello Stranger; Musings on Modern Intimacies by Manuel Betancourt
Arenโt they a beauty?
THE MALE GAZED (2023) and HELLO STRANGER (out Jan 14, 2025!) make for a lovely pair; twinned studies in masculinity and intimacy, respectively, that blend memoir and cultural criticism.

His oeuvre, particularly those works made later in life, can be seen to reflect his attempts to accommodate a queer identity in both his professional and personal life.

Born 1843, a number of pieces by Zahrtmann, such as โAdam in Paradiseโ, โLokiโ (1912), and โPrometheusโ (1906), can be seen as examples where โqueeringโ the subject is both process and action while still remaining indeterminately latent.

Northern Irelandโs Sex Scandal that Wasnโt
I wrote this, in History Today, about how social class and local politics could influence the policing of male same-sex desire in Northern Ireland in the 1950s.
