I’m sure it’s a coincidence that Call of Duty 4 misattributes this quote to Orwell

Everyone should definitely make art! Not commercially of course, but for their own sake everyone should, at some point, sing or draw or paint or write or something. I don’t care if it’s good, that’s not the point

UK PEOPLE: this is REALLY IMPORTANT. If the government bans under-16s from using VPNs, then logically they must intend to REQUIRE AGE VERIFICATION FOR ALL VPN USE. Which will affect adults too!

I agree that would be a bad outcome. Maybe we require people who are buying a property which already has a tenant to give them a very long notice period before they’re allowed to do that, or let renters have a say in who can buy a property that they’re currently living in?

How about we first pass laws which make it unappealing to be a landlord, and then have the government buy large chunks of housing up once it’s cheap to do so

Information literacy and chatbots as search By Emily This post started off as a thread I wrote and posted across social media on Sunday evening. I'm reproducing the thread (lightly edited) first and...

I've been shouting about this since Google first floated the idea of LLMs as a replacement for search in 2021. Synthetic text is not a suitable tool for information access!

Let’s be clear: if the Palestine Action hunger strikers die, the government will bear moral responsibility | George Monbiot The three remaining hunger strikers have been convicted of nothing. Yet with astonishing cruelty, ministers refuse to listen to their reasonable demands, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

If the Palestine Action hunger strikers die - which they could do at any moment, as they are now very close to the end - it will be the government that killed them. Today’s column explains why. Please share, and write urgently to your MP.

He figured out a setup with the instrument balanced on the saddle and both of us walking alongside, and we chatted for the 5 mins it took to get back to mine, then he cycled off. It completely turned around what had up until that point been a pretty bad day

I was trying to walk about 1km back home after a rehearsal with a very heavy musical instrument in a case with a broken wheel, having massively underestimated how difficult this would be, and I was extremely not enjoying the experience until a passing cyclist dismounted and offered to help

Okay real talk, the only sense in which GenAI is "here to stay" is that even after the bubble pops, AI is digital asbestos that is poisoning everything and we'll probably be picking the detritus out of everywhere it's ended up for years, assuming there's a will to remove it en masse that is.

no i do not want to give you my email for 10% off. and furthermore, I don’t think i should have to click a button that says “i’m a dumb bitch” to indicate that. you’re a website that sells blankets and you can’t speak to me like that.

Every dollar JK Rowling makes from Harry Potter is going into bankrolling an extortion racket issuing legal threats to organizations across the UK to purge themselves of trans people or face ruinous lawfare.

ChatGPT encouraged college graduate to commit suicide, family claims in lawsuit against OpenAI | CNN A 23-year-old man killed himself in Texas after ChatGPT ‘goaded’ him to commit suicide, his family says in a lawsuit.

I fully believe in the corporate death penalty and believe we would be a better world if OpenAI lost its corporate charter and was forcibly dissolved.

everything about the attempt to co-opt the language of social justice to promote AI personhood makes my skin absolutely crawl

that people are doing it in the current political environment, where the most basic human rights are crumbling before our eyes, is as bleak as it gets for me

Feels like they’re really saying the quiet part out loud here, given that this approach obviously won’t achieve any time savings whatsoever, but does give management an excuse to increase workloads as well as paving the way for future deskilling. Almost as if that’s really what all this is about!

Yes exactly! The Drax power plant in the UK is pretty much the reason that I’m skeptical of biofuels projects by default - at worst, biofuels are greenwashing that sucks oxygen out of the room re actually meaningful climate interventions while taking us further from where we need to be

I’m not saying biofuels are bad! Just that they aren’t carbon negative and we shouldn’t imply they are!

lol at you asking for me to provide sources when nothing in this thread has sources to begin with

02.09.2025 10:29 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0

The intended reading of that point is obviously that this process is carbon negative, which is clearly *false* if all of the seaweed becomes biofuel!

02.09.2025 10:27 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 3 📌 0

The post doesn’t mention any other use so it’s actually pretty reasonable to assume that the vast majority of it, if not all of it, is going to become biofuel!

02.09.2025 10:14 👍 4 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 0

You can’t claim that it mitigates CO2 emissions if all of the absorbed CO2 ends up back in the atmosphere after it’s made into biofuel, surely
