A tomahawk missile costs the taxpayers the same amount of money as one five-year major NIH research grant. Remember that every time they tell us one of those missed the target, blew up paintings of enemy aircraft or tanks, or was the fifth and unnecessary hit on the same target.

Sex-specific neural responses to smartphone cues in young adults - Biology of Sex Differences Problematic smartphone use has been associated with altered reward and executive control network activity, yet potential sex differences in the underlying neural mechanisms remain insufficiently under...

Did you know? πŸ“± When seeing smartphone cues in an MRI, young men show stronger activation in attention and control brain networks: The more activated, the higher their craving. Whereas women show a different pattern: Brain activity decreasing as problematic use increases. #sabv #ossd

Unfortunately, I was not required to survive the early life cuteness, but somehow her previous owners did! I think I’d just melt into a puddle every time I looked at her!

Graph of award probability of R35 and R01 from NIH factbook as a function of review rank percentile. As is apparent, 2025 is a significant departure, with lower award probabilities at all scores <40 and significant departures from norm, where even being in the top 10% is no longer a nearly certain indicator of success.

The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted.

What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards.

Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.

Every time you experience something new, your brain faces a decision: Should it update an existing memory or create a new one?

In our new paper in @sfnjournals.bsky.social #JNeurosci, we isolate that exact decision, moment-by-moment during learning 🧡

As a past Next Generation Leader, I can definitively say the program helped shape how I approach my science. Collaboration is key to making an impact, and so is backing innovation with values-driven research.

I highly recommend applying for this program 🧠
