There's actually an insane amount of historical precedent, which is only made more frustrating by the fact that people with huge audiences don't seem to ever read things from those historians...
NEH's budget is tiny—not just compared to NSF/NIH, but compared to humanities funding in every other wealthy nation. What little was there was largely rescinded and several programs were cut in full last year. It decimated not merely individual projects but whole corners of the humanities in the US.

i’m not a historian but you know, i was married to one for over 20 years, and if there is one thing I have learned from spending time among historians (and reading the books they’ve recommended to me) it’s that historians know how to contextualize basically everything
