Dear medievalist and medieval-curious friends, please help spread the good word about a new opportunity to enroll in the Advanced Certificate in Medieval Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center. CUNY may not be rich, but we are uniquely rich in medievalists! www.gc.cuny.edu/events/medie... #medievalsky

Smoke, Memory, and the American Story Adrian Miller joins me to talk about why Black barbecue and Black foodways are essential to understanding labor, memory, community, and the American story.

Barbecue might be the most American food there is.

But the story of how it became that wayβ€”and the people who built those traditionsβ€”is more complicated than most of us realize.

@soulfoodscholar.bsky.social and I dig in below.

Pass the plate & share.

As a knitter, I know that the length of one's foot is the same length as one's forearm (from elbow crease to wrist).

Just sayin'.

But I can't help but wonder if Trump is ordering his shoe size for everyone. As in "you can't fill my shoes."

when people say "this isn't who we are" or "this is unprecedented, and historians won't be able to explain how things got this bad", lemme remind you that historians can provide any number of examples of US science experimenting on Black and brown people sans ethics or consent

Okay, all the obvious β€œwtf” stuff aside, this isn’t even what they say it is?

(Good or popular) writers are not guaranteed to be good editors.

In fact, most of them are good & popular because of a good editor.

So it’s not offering β€œediting” advice.

It is telling you how to mimic the writer.

Historian of French Revolution here to say that in periods like this, squeamish compromisers do as much to drive radicalization as do ideologues. If you keep making excuses for the unfit king, eventually folks come for you and him.

Those who have tamped down concerns about the SAVE Act’s chance of passage in the Senate are wrong. Keep your eyes on the prize. The potential for a blowout in 2026 is top of mind for Trump, and there are only a few ways to avoid it.

Call your Senators. 202-224-3121.

If you are watching Trump's presser right now, you are seeing beyond reasonable doubt a person not mentally suited for any position of responsibility. Even running a small store.

GOP members of the House and Senate: You are seeing this too.

Today marks the 250th anniversary of the publication of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations. Here is a marginal note in the first edition made by a student regarding the manufacturer of iron pots: "Very good indeed we should na want Pots to make our porridge in." It's in the (UoE Library.)

Just a reminder that Muslims have been on this continent since the first arrival of non-Indigenous people. They were among the first generation of Americans, and have been here ever since.

There's actually an insane amount of historical precedent, which is only made more frustrating by the fact that people with huge audiences don't seem to ever read things from those historians...

NEH's budget is tinyβ€”not just compared to NSF/NIH, but compared to humanities funding in every other wealthy nation. What little was there was largely rescinded and several programs were cut in full last year. It decimated not merely individual projects but whole corners of the humanities in the US.

i’m not a historian but you know, i was married to one for over 20 years, and if there is one thing I have learned from spending time among historians (and reading the books they’ve recommended to me) it’s that historians know how to contextualize basically everything
