Madeleine Watts's intro to Antigone Kefala's THE ISLAND, up today in The Nation:
"The plot is not really the point; the writing is most interested in the process of 'becoming' trying to find a new kind of form in which the experience of being alive will crystalize."

Over the last few weeks, we've seen devastating cuts to federal arts funding. This funding has been critical to organizations like ours. To support our mission and π celebrate our literary community in the Bay, come out for one (or both!) upcoming Transit events:
A picture of three books on a wooden table: upper left is an ARC of Kate Zambreno's ANIMAL STORIES, forthcoming from Transit Books; on the right is I WAS WORKING by Ariel Yelen, out from Princeton UP; and on the bottom left is Caitlin Lorraine Johnson's IO, a booklet out from The Economy Press.
Exciting mail day!

We need indie presses. Certainly more than we need government funds to be spent βfoster[ing] AI competencyβ or βempower[ing] houses of worship to serve communities,β whatever that means.

Along with many other nonprofit arts organizations, we learned last night that our grant from the National Endowment for the Artsβ$40,000 toward the publication of our books in 2025βhas been terminated. While this news was not unexpected, its message was chilling.
I cannot wait for this!!! Which is often how I feel about this series, but especially with Kate Zambreno!
All the summer bulbs are in. And I served as a feast of sorts for many swarming insects. Iβve left the bugs to celebrate their victory against me and am stretched out on my favorite sofa reading Immemorial by Lauren Markham. A good Saturday. @transitbooks.bsky.social
Coming in September! Kate Zambrenoβs ANIMAL STORIES, an exploration of mortality, alienation, boredom, surveillance, and how we regard ourselves among the animals, part of our Undelivered Lecture series, is now available for preorder β¨

Book cover of βAstroβ by Manuel Marsol shows a six legged rock & water creature walking across stones.
In this Spanish import (translated into English), an astronaut lands on a strange planet and is befriended by a creature, who is the narrator of the story. The creature is accidentally killed, and Astro mourns. Push kids to think a little deeper with this unique book & its ethereal vibe.

Picture book βAstroβ written and illustrated by Manuel Marsol, translated by Lizzie Davis. A large multilimbed creature with mountain- and river-like features spans the cover with a tiny human figure hanging from its chin.
Out today: One of the most beautiful and affecting picture books I have ever seen. Astro tells an existential story about friendship, loss, and grief. The mixed media illustrations are absolutely phenomenal.
