Late deciders, higher turnout: what the Gorton and Denton byelection taught us about voters
High numbers of undecideds may partially explain the late swing to the Greens.
New piece from w/ @hannahbunting.bsky.social & @jess-smith.bsky.social on the Gorton & Denton byelection, and what it might tell us about British politics.
We cover turnout, late-deciding voters, gender gaps & the continuing fragmentation of the party system 🧵

That's not too bad for the UK. For the most competitive jobs you could be at >1000 applicants.

Just a flavour, but there are currently four 'permanent' jobs on jobs.ac.uk in politics, and **not one** in the UK.

Sorry - I meant current parliamentarian! There of course were. I think Nadia is a likely one but it's a bit unclear from her Wikipedia.

It's possible that the new Green MP Hannah Spencer is the only parliamentarian who had a manual job immediately before election.
Are there any others?

I think maybe they were offering good odds. What they have now is what Ladbrokes and Bet365 had last few days. Seems Labour has tanked though.

I'm seeing similar to a few days ago? I put money on a party and at that time Greens were quite favourite followed by Reform and Labour.
It seems Labour's odds have got longer though so assume it's G/R.

And 'Greens win. Maybe Labour should reconsider their strategy.'
I think a lot hinges on whether/if it goes Green or Reform.

I don't know why, if AI can do all of those things, it can't also just do the question, pre-analysis plan, and the analysis.

Cool. I think @ronjasczepanski.bsky.social has a similar paper? May be wrong (remembering from a workshop a few years ago!)

There's been a pretty large pivot in the last year or two to both more working and a more diligent cohort. I think it's actually better (generally more engaged and mature) but the system isn't built for it. No control over timetable, all on one campus, etc.

This is true, even at Southampton (typically drawing wealthier students from the south east). I'd probably say the majority of students that I know well enough (e.g., supervise dissertations) have at least part time jobs and a couple work approaching FT hours.
