Western Washington is currently experiencing record flooding from a series of strong atmospheric rivers. 12 rivers are at major flood stage. 100,000 people await evacuation orders.
Will some places see less severe climate impacts than others? Yes. Does anywhere promise safe haven? Absolutely not.
For a scene in the next season of Fargo :)
Rep. Jacob Rosecrants 🌩️ @jacobrosecrants I’m aware of this awful situation, shared by my constituent Dr. Landis. Nobody seems to know where Dr. Abedini is being held, tho he has contacted family. Rep. Deck reached out to Rep. Cole & Sen. Lankford’s office is looped in. Here to be a squeaky wheel & help however I can. [screenshot of Prof. Landis' tweet about Dr. Abedini being seized by ICE] 8:23 PM • Nov 24, 2025 • 1,351 Views
Rep. Jacob Rosecrants is in touch with State Rep. Jared Deck (Norman) and Rep. Tom Cole (Repub). The office of U.S. Sen. James Lankford (Repub) has been made aware.
They can't find Dr. Abedini's location. Important for several reasons including filing habeas corpus docs.

The click-bait scourge is more and more rampant among NYT headline editors — a cheapening of a great legacy.
Having contrarian views as part of the marketplace of ideas is good and healthy for society. Brandishing contrarianism as your brand or shtick as a writer is childish, or dangerous. Looking at you two NYT conservative columnists.

Oh the cruelty!

His politics shaped by Cold War binaries, Cheney fixated on threats from outside, and on enabling the president to respond to them. The Founding Fathers were cognizant of fallibility and corruptibility of men and wanted the impulses of power to be tempered always by moderating hindrances.
In this article Cheney comes across as a tragic, paranoid figure. He did the decidedly non-Conservative thing (think Edmund Burke) of believing in and enacting a history-correcting vision, one in which the enlargement of presidential authority necessary, good and urgent.

Speaks of the political maturity of the electorate — and the of the moment’s urgency.
And that is effing overdue.
The 2024 presidential election and NYC mayoral election yesterday are perhaps the first contests in U.S. history when stances on Palestine have electoral consequences. K Harris didn’t get that. Mamdani proves it.
Meanwhile, Tsurkov speaks.
She recounts tales of captivity and horror, but also of resilience and the irrepressible will to life. May you heal fast in your حرية. Much love to you, Elizabeth!

Speaking of, a reminder about a classic:

Must say that ever since Roger Cohen moved from his position as foreign affairs columnist to head NYT's Paris bureau, his voice of thoughtful commentary (and lyrical prose) on int'l affairs has been very much missed. #MakeCohenColumnistAgain!

i have nothing but respect for Mr Landler’s work, but the framing of the piece here seems off. If it’s accountability, it’s almost too late to count. The move seems motivated more by damage control to the institution of monarchy, as several Guardian columnists have noted.
On Congress’s self-inflicted ”cease and dissolve.” Remarkable!
Well said!
