It's extraordinary. Also, I adored your book! Beautifully written, impeccably researched, and it gives a fresh and thoughtful take on Didion. Thank you for writing it!

Fully agree! Where I Was From was probably the Didion book I most struggled with at first, but is now one of the works that I most value. It made me completely rethink how I engaged with the rest of her work.
If you missed my event last month at the The New York Public Library and would be interested in hearing me talk about my book, American political culture, Hollywood history, and Joan Didion for an hour, you're in luck!

Some painful, but valuable, insights in here for fellow Didion scholars and others who admire her work so deeply. Already this preview is making me rethink some aspects of her works that I have spent years studying, especially "Where I Was From." A must read.

Street art showing Gisele Pelicot looking badass with the phrase written next to her βthe shame must switch sidesβ in French
Literally crying hearing how French women applaud Gisele Pelicot every day as she walks out of court. #r4today
Everywhere around the world women watch & applaud her bravery too. She stood up for all of us.
Because the shame has to switch sides.
Restricting access to safe abortion drives women and girls to unsafe procedures.
Access to safe abortion protects the health of women and girls.
As with all other health services, women and girls should be able to access safe and respectful abortion care, when they need it, without fear of harm, punishment or recrimination.
This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.
Excellent overview and analysis of the latest issues in #trade, ##foodsecurity, and #sustdev, and just in time for the holiday season!
Such a thoughtful and well-researched article too! I really look forward to reading more from @timothydenevi.bsky.social on Didion.
Rereading Joan Didion, βyou find her astringency relentless, undimmed by age,β Zadie Smith writes. βMaybe this is why it remains easier to look at pictures of Didion than to read her. The look is undoubtedly a vibe. But the reading is a dissection.β
"Character β the willingness to accept responsibility for oneβs own life β is the source from which self-respect springs."
Joan Didion, who would have been 90 today, on self-respect
So excited to read this! Already pre-ordered, counting down the days until it arrives in my mailbox. :) I'm finishing a PhD thesis on Didion and love to see this expert analysis coming out on her relationship to Hollywood! Thank you for writing it.
