I think this story is a really good example for people to look at when it comes to understanding bias at NYT. It's not that the reporter, Dana Rubinstein, says anything outright false. But the framing, word choices, etc., add up to an unprofessional and biased account.

the NYT's anti-Mamdani stuff also has this very distinct tone of sneering resentment. oh, he does all this COOL stuff that PEOPLE like, does he? but why hasn't he done THIS (thing that he has done) then?

This constantly repeated scenario of hundreds of thousands fleeing from one bombed out location only to then be forced to flee from another. What a moral stain.

These are the kinds of results that make clear, by the way, why the US can't really be considered a true hegemon in the region. And even more so, why Israel can't.

The complete and utter betrayal of Ukraine by the US will be a key episode in the story of its imperial decline

The failure of analysis is profound. The most ubiquitous forms of antisemitism today are very blatantly intersectional (there is no better term). Itโ€™s not a lofty abstract principles to counter that with cross group coalitions

This kind of talk about not getting enough sympathy from โ€œthe very people to whom we had given so muchโ€ also just sounds privileged and petulant from a Black perspective. Instead of the usual โ€œwe donโ€™t need sympathy we need you to actโ€ the grievance here is about not receiving enough sympathy.

And if transactionalism is the status quo, the charge of โ€œwhat have you done for me latelyโ€ will cut both ways. Not good grounds for coalition building

The arrogance of it is compounded (โ€œyou unfortunate ones are undeserving because you failed to soothe my emotionโ€) by any lack of reflection or contrition for some truly heinous statements these leaders made in the immediate aftermath. I wonโ€™t forget.

At worst, it reveals a smug racism and sense of superiority towards other minorities. The โ€œbetrayalโ€ I felt from those kinds of statements is knowing how little regard they had for people like mine all along.

I think the choice to โ€œsteelmanโ€ this notion ultimately strengthens your argument in favor of cross communal coalitions, but even the โ€œsteelmanโ€ version also makes clear how the previous commitments to liberalism were already paper thin before October 7. It reveals, at best, a paternalism.

Fight for something: 'Good governance' is not enough Opponents of right-wing populism need to stand for more than the status quo.

Right-wing populism offers easy solutions to the real failures of liberalism and 21st-century capitalism. Right? Yeah?

Maybe sometimes. But Austria? They have it good: health care (free), education (free), trains (on time). The appeal, I think, is something else. www.theredoubt.net/fight-for-so...

Is the implication that Mamdani is such a radical Muslim and anti-colonial leftist that he would support a terrorist attack against himself?

NYT editors sound like they are soft endorsing these attacks, insinuating that he has been appropriately cowed.

Tweet from Rep. Andy Ogles: "Muslims don't belong in American society. Pluralism is a lie."

Obviously the extreme bigotry against Muslims is more than enough reason to oppose this, but it's worth noting that this is also an attack on the very basic principle of religious pluralism that has made the US a comparatively safe place for Diaspora Jews.

The Danger of Silence When Academic Freedom Is Under Threat Inaction from rank-and-file workers enabled government censorship during the Red Scares.

My former employer had so many soft power ways of silencing dissent. I got taken down a peg for standing up for lecturers. I had my named chair withdrawn bc of my inability to shut up about bad behavior.

Speaking your mind is THE ENTIRE PURPOSE of tenure. Donโ€™t fucking waste it.

Guess What Moderate Democratic Voters Arenโ€™t Anymore? Moderate. Two new polls suggest that moderate Democrats, too, want higher taxes on the rich and some measure of economic populism. Moderate isnโ€™t what it was in 1992.

Moderate Democrats with columns in newspapers are constantly saying the Democratic Party is way too liberal on "social" issues. Moderate Democratic voters in real life do not feel this way. With some polling data from @gelliottmorris.com and @dataforprogress.org. newrepublic.com/article/2074...

If the Dems who win in the 2026 midterms get squeamish about prosecuting this administration, we'll need to elect a bunch of new people running on Nuremberg shit for 2028. This isn't a joke. It's the law. It's justice. Biden let Trump back in the WH and this happened because Joe didn't do his job

Even white Dems make this mistake constantly:

When they see 90%+ of Black voters voting for a candidate, they cannot accept that this means that the candidate is an overwhelmingly better choice than the others.

Instead, they believe that "Black people vote for Black people! Racial solidarity!๐Ÿคก"

Tommy Robinson is writing for Jerusalem Post, and that makes some people uncomfortable - opinion
When journalism abandons the debate over ideas and focuses instead on policing who is permitted to speak, the search for truth quietly gives way to the enforcement of acceptable opinion.

Robinson had previously tried to address โ€œthe Jewish Questionโ€ in a 2022 article which he deleted shortly afterwards. He divided the Jews into two types โ€“ acceptable ones and disreputable ones. He particularly had it in for the Anti-Defamation League โ€“ in his eyes a cesspit of Jewish liberalism and subversion internationally.

The Broligarchy's First World War? AI-guided weapons, two out-of-control authoritarians, no legal authority and a toxic mess of masculinity: welcome to the manosphere's first major conflict

NEW: Is this the broligarchyโ€™s first world war? AI, like war & rape, is a hyper-masculine fantasy of God-like power, a myth at the dark heart of what weโ€™re seeing play out in the Gulf. This war hasnโ€™t replaced the Epstein scandal. It is the Epstein scandal.
