I think this story is a really good example for people to look at when it comes to understanding bias at NYT. It's not that the reporter, Dana Rubinstein, says anything outright false. But the framing, word choices, etc., add up to an unprofessional and biased account.
the NYT's anti-Mamdani stuff also has this very distinct tone of sneering resentment. oh, he does all this COOL stuff that PEOPLE like, does he? but why hasn't he done THIS (thing that he has done) then?
This constantly repeated scenario of hundreds of thousands fleeing from one bombed out location only to then be forced to flee from another. What a moral stain.
These are the kinds of results that make clear, by the way, why the US can't really be considered a true hegemon in the region. And even more so, why Israel can't.

The failure of analysis is profound. The most ubiquitous forms of antisemitism today are very blatantly intersectional (there is no better term). It’s not a lofty abstract principles to counter that with cross group coalitions
This kind of talk about not getting enough sympathy from “the very people to whom we had given so much” also just sounds privileged and petulant from a Black perspective. Instead of the usual “we don’t need sympathy we need you to act” the grievance here is about not receiving enough sympathy.
And if transactionalism is the status quo, the charge of “what have you done for me lately” will cut both ways. Not good grounds for coalition building
The arrogance of it is compounded (“you unfortunate ones are undeserving because you failed to soothe my emotion”) by any lack of reflection or contrition for some truly heinous statements these leaders made in the immediate aftermath. I won’t forget.
At worst, it reveals a smug racism and sense of superiority towards other minorities. The “betrayal” I felt from those kinds of statements is knowing how little regard they had for people like mine all along.
I think the choice to “steelman” this notion ultimately strengthens your argument in favor of cross communal coalitions, but even the “steelman” version also makes clear how the previous commitments to liberalism were already paper thin before October 7. It reveals, at best, a paternalism.

NYT editors sound like they are soft endorsing these attacks, insinuating that he has been appropriately cowed.

Obviously the extreme bigotry against Muslims is more than enough reason to oppose this, but it's worth noting that this is also an attack on the very basic principle of religious pluralism that has made the US a comparatively safe place for Diaspora Jews.

Robinson had previously tried to address “the Jewish Question” in a 2022 article which he deleted shortly afterwards. He divided the Jews into two types – acceptable ones and disreputable ones.
