βPLACES IN THE HEART is one of the great films of the 1980s, and the greatest Texas movie of all time.β

"He was mesmerizing: six feet, six inches of pale, balding, spindly-limbed magnificence, hands moving as if he were plucking words from the air like his Heat character did with data. Sometimes heβd have a big beard that sat on his chest like a new species of pet." www.rogerebert.com/mzs/a-beauti...

More great mail. I first saw RAFFERTY AND THE GOLD DUST TWINS when it aired on TCM Underground back in May 2021βit instantly became an all-time favorite. Finally picked up the recently-released Warner Archive Blu-ray. Also remembered that I grabbed the novelization a while agoβsuch a beautiful book.
Incredible mail day. Thanks to LOA for sending along a copy of their new Jim Thompson volume, which collects five of his best novels. Itβs gorgeous. Beyond glad to see him getting the treatment he deserves. Out officially tomorrow. Go get it. www.loa.org/books/five-n...

David Chaseβs NOT FADE AWAY was already an all-time favorite and one of the truest movies I know, but the black-and-white version (now on @criterionchannl.bsky.social) still managed to be a total revelation. Makes it all work even better. Difficult for me to articulate how much it moves me.
Now reading (after completing another full rewatch)
I donβt think Iβm officially supposed to announce anything yet, so letβs just say youβre on the right track.
What a goddamn lineupβhonored to be part of it. Hope to see you in Dallas in April.
Hereβs an interview I did with French music writer Ben Langlois about the music thatβs shaped me and the music in my books. Heβs included a French translation of the interview, as well as the original in English. This was a lot of fun.

James McWilliams, Frank Stanfordβs biographer, on my other favorite poet, Everette Maddox. This is a terrific intro to his life and work (and features many of his poems, including βHypothetical Self-Epitaph,β which is one I think about every damn day). www.poetryfoundation.org/articles/177...

@wmboyle4.bsky.social I'm a little late to the party, but god damn! A banger from start to finish. Beautifully done, sir.
New issue of @southwestreview.bsky.social is a stunner. It features a Needle Drops column where @meganabbott.bsky.social writes about Enyaβs βMarble Hallsβ in THE AGE OF INNOCENCE, @mattzollerseitz.bsky.social on PLACES IN THE HEART, & much more. 6 bucks a copy. southwestreview.com/volume-110-n...

David Lynch left us one year ago exactly. A few days after his death, we recorded a tribute episode with @harleypeyton.bsky.social, @ramseycampbell.bsky.social, Brian Yuzna, @wmboyle4.bsky.social, and Knut Larsson, who shared their thoughts and memories about Lynch's lasting legacy. π₯
I can already tell that this is gonna be one of those movies that I evangelize about for the rest of my life.
