A view looking down towards a lighthouse with 313 stairs in the way and a setting sun

Point Reyes lighthouse was interesting. I got to see massive graded beds and a few burrow fossils. Despite heavy winds trying to push me off of the rocks!

A large outcrop of eclogite in California with a black cane leaned up against it for scale.
Thatโs a lot of Eclogite.
My cane for scale!

Large pebble conglomerate
Folded serpentinite
A cliff full of serpentinite
A green anemone in a tidal pool
That was a lot of physical demand on my body, but it was fantastic. We went to Angel Island to check out pebble conglomerates, blueschist, and a possible volcanic bomb(?)

A digitally painted scene from the Fezouata Formation featuring Aegirocassis, Sagenograptus, Falcisicaris, Bathmoceras, Rhopalocystis, Plumalina, Brachyaglaspis, Choia, Megistaspis, Eoconularia, Plasiacystis, Plumulites, Ampyx, Pirania, and a non-specific Conodont
Fezouata Formation.
Felt like drawing an Aegirocassis, accidentally drew a bunch of other stuff too.

A tabletop covered in boxes containing all kinds of fossils.
Whiteboard sketch of the two major groups of brachiopods, highlighting soft tissue anatomy (pedicle, lophophore) that doesn't usually fossilize.
Nautiloid fossil (Bellerophon?) showing internal septa dividing up shell interior into chambers. These chambers are sometimes filled with calcite spar, sometimes with sediment, and in three cases in the middle of this view, with BOTH. The boundary between them shows the paleo-horizontal, with sediment below and spar above (geopetal "way-up" indicator). Annotation shows the "up" direction (down!).

A stratigraphic chart showing sedimentary layers in the pink, white, and blue colors of the trans flag. Beneath them is a drawing of an igneous intrusion with the yellow, white, purple, and black colors of the nonbinary flag.

I am proud to be a trans geologist, and I celebrate each and every one of my queer peers. Happy pride!

Some neat stuff for sure, using my knowledge of lichens on the Antietam formation I determined this was a quartzite/quartz sandstone before we even chipped part of it off to be sure. And I was right!!! :)

We also expect to see kink banding at a depth of around 10km in whatโs called the B.D.T. zone. So that tells us at some point in time there was 10km of rock above us! But thereโs no mountain there anymore! Thatโs evidence of the former tall peaks of the Appalachian mountains.

Next we noticed thereโs kink banding or kinks in the phyllite. That means this mudrock was squeezed at least twice! Once to form phyllite, and another time in a separate direction from the foliation to form the kinks! That formed during the creation of a super continent known as Pangea!

This tells me that these rocks were initially deposited at the bottom of an ocean. Now you might notice that these photo are not of the Atlantic Ocean. In fact itโs several miles from the ocean today! But at one point in time, these rocks were deposited in an ocean.

At Totier Creek Reservoir, thereโs this rock we found called Phyllite. Phyllite forms when shale gets metamorphosed. Mud needs calm, quiet water to settle down. I also spotted some greywacke sandstone. Greywacke only forms in the deep ocean during undersea landslides called turbidity currents.
