Kate Clanchy: I was cancelled. It made me contemplate suicide When Kate Clanchy wrote about the children she had been teaching, she was blindsided by the resulting furore. Now, four years on, her publisher has apologised

Good! About time she had an apology.

ANGELA LANSBURY - born 100yrs ago today - told how her daughter fell under the spell of a Hollywood deadbeat who’d pick her up from school & get her to steal money & food from her parents. Worried, Lansbury moved the entire family to Ireland.

The β€˜deadbeat’ was Charles Manson.

Here is why I will never do another writers' workshop Now, I do fully accept that other people, a lot of other people, gain an enormous amount out of writer’s workshops.

I should have known better than to attempt it again... but here is why this time it's really over.

Pride & Prejudice, analysis, part 2 of 3 β€œNothing is more deceitful,’ said Darcy, β€˜than the appearance of humility.

Darcy and Elizabeth appear to be completely incompatible.
Is it possible they can every tie the knot?
This is how everything conspires against them, particularly their own personalities.

β€œIs there internet on your iPhone?
It isn't connected, it's just a camera.
I'm envious of that.
I hate it. About 10 years ago, Katy Perry was talking to me about the internet armies of all the girl singers, and how cruel and rancid they were. I said, "Well, I wouldn't know because I'm not on the internet." She said,
"So, who are your rivals?" I just looked at her. It was my steely look. I said, "Katy, I don't have rivals. I have friends. All the other women singers that I know are friends. Nobody's competing. Get off the internet and you won't have rivals either."

Jane's words: essay Most of us dreaded the essay we had to write and to modern readers this word is likely to summon memories of school or university, particularly in relation to Jane Austen.

A Year of Jane Austen!
Get your bonnet into a book, make sure it's written by Jane Austen, and in case you're wondering about some of the words she uses see below πŸ‘‡

That's audiobooks ruined then Amazon's quest to destroy humanity proceeds. Audible have announced plans to use AI to 'narrate' audiobooks. That's going to wreck a vital - and fun - part of publishing

On AI audiobooks and Amazon's latest attempt to make the world worse:

The TV industry has no moral compass.
It's purely about ratings, clicks etc.
This is just one of so many exploitatative true crime docs in a tsunami of horrible TV that helps no one but the broadcasters.

Writing competitions are not judged blind & I have my own experience of that. Publishing peeps are very partisan but worse believe unwaveringly in their own righteousness.

It's my decade long held opinion that many on the Brexit right are not really voting about migrants or EU membership or any of the other crap they purport to be about.

They're voting against other people's joy.

Yeah, it's a real omission. I can understand why they did it because the film would have been very long but a real shame.
Instead your left with the idea that Willoughby is an ok bloke.
Austen's intention was that you would see the opposite.

Country Lane in May, Andrea Bates (b.1943)

Old Fox had been out since dawn with a stout willow basket gathering ingredients for his teas, tinctures & syrups, his wines, liniments & poultices. Elderflower, cow parsley, sweet woodruff, hawthorn, mallow, goose-grass & thundering great nettles full green of iron-spit-cure.
