It’s ok if the fire just flashes over the moor. The problem is if the fire takes hold and gets into the peat, as this one did, the intense heat created can lead to damage/cracking/spalling etc. Something I saw first hand in 2003 when the nearby Stoup Brow moor sustained an deep intense wildfire.

Earlier this week I went for a wander onto John Cross Rigg on the North York Moors. The moor is in a pretty poor state after a devastating wildfire last autumn. Fortunately the lovely anthropomorphic standing stone known as The Old Wife’s Neck was left undamaged by the fire. #StandingStoneSunday
