Katie Wilson is proposing a 7-year, $410 million library levy renewal. The previous 7 year levy approved in 2019 was $219 million.
Expanded hours, building infrastructure upgrades, and increased materials are being put front-and-center with the renewal.

Typical Dutch street design: narrow city-centre streets where cars, pedestrians and cyclists share the road paving is used, alongside build-outs and tight geometry to naturally slow motor traffic. Then, once on main roads, clear red cycle tracks keep bikes and motor vehicles safely separated.

Traffic volumes could decrease up to 11 percent, representing almost 65,000 fewer weekday car trips; transit use would jump by almost 25 percent in the most optimistic scenario; and people who still decided to drive would save up to 24 hours of time lost in traffic.

So what did the report find? Well, it considered a variety of congestion pricing models, from tolls on bridges and roads from Maryland and Virginia to a cordon around downtown that drivers would pay $5 to $10 to enter. Annual revenue would range from $110-667 million.

NEWS: @mayorbowser.dc.gov has very unexpectedly released a report @ddotdc.bsky.social finished five years ago on what implementing congestion pricing in D.C. would look like. She had refused to make it public since it was done, but now calls congestion pricing "the wrong policy at the wrong time."

Joyful painting of four Black children at play, cartwheeling and jumping
On Harriet Tubman Day, one of my all-time favorite images by Jacob Lawrence: the joyful & ebullient screenprint "Play," based on panel #4 from the 1940 "Life of Harriet Tubman" series. The series, thirty-one paintings in all, was one of Lawrence's first major bodies of work

Trump Accidentally Sabotages GOP’s 2026 Strategy in Two Crazed Tirades
As Trump issues angry demands to Republicans, drowning out their economic message, a congressional observer explains why they’re in deep trouble in the midterms—and how they may cheat their way out of...
Great point from @normornstein.bsky.social: Trump's demand that the GOP pass grotesque voter suppression measures is explicitly described by him as the way to win the midterms, implicitly admitting Trump's policies are failing.
On the pod Norm is so good on all this:

So true. How hard is it to add “the government of” to the sentence?
I first noticed this in the extreme during the first two Gulf Wars the US waged on Iraq: a complex place with its own history, variety of peoples and factions was reduced to one menacing figure: Saddam Hussein.

In this case, the book, or fragment-carrier, is printed in Germany & is kept in a Danish library. Since the notation is not German, the most likely conclusion is that the book was rebound in Denmark using manuscript fragments available there.

A bit of both. Square notation was also used in England & France, but an expert eye can distinguish between the various styles (I'm not one of those experts). But German-speaking areas used completely different notation, so that's a huge area which can be excluded right away.

Always remember that EVs might be slightly better than gas powered cars, but that at its most basic, a city made for EVs is still a city made for cars. We need to shift to #PlacesForPeople not parking; roll/walkable places connected by transit: experience a city, don’t just drive thru it.

View of a medieval manuscript fragment used as the binding of a small book. The book is open and placed face down, and we see that the fragment is large enough to fit the dimensions of the book. At the bottom of the picture - which is the outer margin of the front page - another fragment has been fitted to fill a gap. The fragment contains square notations and initials in alternating blue and red.
I'm preparing for a talk which I will be giving in Denmark in two weeks, which concerns this delightful fragment which I examined last October. Probably early thirteenth century, & very possibly Danish. It's delightful to delve deeper into it.

A Merriam-Webster dot com screenshot of the word "antepenultimate," which reads:
antepenultimate (1 of 2) (adjective)
an·te·pen·ul·ti·mate (¦an-ti-pi-¦nəl-tə-mət)
1: of or relating to an antepenult
2: coming before the next to last in any series
I am, I think, on the antepenultimate chapter of this book.
I love that word, antepenultimate. Third to last. It's my favorite word. I just love that it exists, PLUS it's enormous fun to say. Everybody knows penultimate, but antepenultimate, that's taking it UP a notch.
What's your favorite word?
