This is an interesting take. Newcastle's trams, like many other cities', were arguably disposed of because of their lack of flexibility and need for more infrastructure upkeep. I think electric buses would be better on roads personally.
Was great to share some of my research on #Tyneside 's historic #transport infrastructure with professionals in civil engineering practices. I learned a great deal about the challenges facing modern engineering today too!

Just a random relic of the #ner / #lner #tynesideelectrics that sits in my garage. It's an insulator from the old third rail but more importantly it's Royal Doulton's contribution to #railway #history as it carried electricity on the country's first electrified mainline in 1904 ⚡🚃

45 years ago today, Tyne and Wear PTE decided that Gateshead Railway Station should close as the Metro came on stream saying 'the role of the railway station will be substantially reduced' and recommended that 'Gateshead B.R. Station be withdrawn'.

Had my first ride on a new #Metro! Was great to have a much quieter and smooth journey. I must say, however, where are the hanging handles. People were falling over onto eachother as the train accelerated and decelerated. Seems like an oversight to me! #tyneandwearmetro #train #publictransport
