All the SaGa games feel highly experimental, but one this one is a high water mark. And it's actually pretty fun too.
Each character type (humans, robots, monsters, mystics) level up with unique systems. Robots equip better gear. Monsters eat other monsters to evolve. Mystics take skills from foes.

RPG battle scene with pre-rendered graphics. Characters are fighting a cat girl.
Another game with a big influence on Fun Zone Omega (and every RPG I've made)...
SaGa Frontier on PlayStation 1!
It's got 3 games worth of weird subsystems mashed into one. No one told these designers no!
The setting RULES! I guess it's outer space but with wizards, kung fu guys, and vampires.

The battles in Quester involve making resources (gunpowder, batteries, medicine) each turn, then spending them on different abilities. Meanwhile, managing aggro from the enemies is a MUST. It's plays like a sophisticated autobattler.
That's just one system. The rest of the game is just as creative.

Since my game (Fun Zone Omega) is coming out soon, I want to talk about a game that had a big influence on it...
QUESTER thousand-games.itch.io/quester
It's a Japanese post-apocalyptic RPG. I didn't copy anything in particular about it, but I admire its mash-up of unique, inventive systems.

Pixel art character sheet depicting Sunny the skeleton kid. Her game abilities are listed. She is a green skeleton in an aura of yellow fire.
Based on feedback from Fun Zone Omega demo, Sunny the skeleton kid seems to be a fav character. And why wouldn't she be?
Her plasma aura destroys anything she touches, but you shouldn't judge someone for that.

It's issue 16 of ChoiceBeat: The Visual Novel and Interactive Fiction zine!
In gaming zine terms, 16 issues makes us about 1,000 years old. Lots of wisdom here. ๐งโโ๏ธ

A scan of the box artwork for Sorcerian Forever, with a photo of painted figurines of an adventuring party gathered in a 3D model dungeon/ruin with a stone staircase curving up and around,, and the party of a kneeling bearded guy with a staff, an elven lass with purple hair and showing a bit of leg by a glowing light, another green haired elf with their hands cupped by the magical wand-light, and a tall armoured warrior with a greatsword over hiis shoulder. It's very much like something you'd see for a D&D diorama display.
Ten years later... The Legend is Reborn.
I loooove this figurine dungeon diorama box cover for Sorcerian Forever (1997), sequel to the original popular Japanese CRPG that was the fifth game of the Dragon Slayer series.

Laugh Track on Steam
You're now the lead writer for Juno's World, a perfectly normal sitcom in which nothing strange or horrible happens, ever! Choose your scripts, decide what characters to build relationships with, and ...
Did you know you can play the wacky psychological horror sitcom Laugh Track right now? It's true! It's free and the cops can't stop you (yet).
If you've already played it, tell a friend! We've got no marketing budget, so word of mouth helps a lot. store.steampowered.com/app/3765430/...

I drew the tilesets in GIMP and assembled the maps in RPG Maker. Then I exported the maps out of RPG Maker as images and put them altogether in GIMP.

YES! As a kid, I would stare at those for... well, a few minutes, but it seemed like hours.
Because of that formative experience, I often make games where all the maps can be stitched together into a big picture.

Map of an island made from thousands of pixel art tiles. The logo in the corner says Fun Zone Omega.
YO! THIS IS OBJECTIVELY AMAZING. I made an ENORMOUS 400-screen map of all the areas in my game, Fun Zone Omega.
You can see the full-resolution version here: andihagen.wordpress.com/wp-content/u... It'll take a bit to load because it's 30,000 pixels wide! ๐ฏ

I played this at an event! It was great!
It's like a twin-stick shooter, but instead of shooting, you type words!
Apparently, all the words are real words, but you won't believe some of them. (Scrabble players, write these down.)
Plus HyperTyper is a great name for a game. #indiegames
