Of the Structural Pressures That Silence Academics
Since their inception, universities have been regarded as lighthouses guiding the storm-tossed ship of society. These institutions, tasked with generating ideas that shape and secure the future ofโฆ
Universities are meant to model openness and critical thinking. Yet many academics remain silent about injustice within their own institutions. This new article from @ecrlife.bsky.social examines two entrenched mechanisms that may be helping sustain that culture.

Call for Applications, Postgraduate Diploma Programme | ICTP
Are you a student who dreams of earning a PhD in physics or mathematics, but who lives in a country lacking such opportunities? ICTP could be your first step on the path to attaining a PhD.
One of the most unique aspects of ICTP is our Diploma Programme. Pre-PhD students from the Global South spend 1 year in Trieste to gain knowledge and skills necessary to pursue PhDs worldwide.
The 2026-2027 call is now open w/ a February 28 deadline. Please circulate.

What Rosalind Franklin truly contributed to the discovery of DNAโs structure
Franklin was no victim in how the DNA double helix was solved. An overlooked letter and an unpublished news article, both written in 1953, reveal that she was an equal player.
I like this piece a lot about Rosalind Franklinโs role in solving the structure of DNA. It really respects her as a full scientist - what she saw, what she didnโt appreciate, what could have been if sheโd had true peers to support her, or had not died so young.

Jhelam Deshpande - Ecology, Evolution and Networks
YouTube video by Fishers Fishes
I was recently invited by a cool student initiative from IISER in India @fishersfishes.bsky.social (fishersfishes.github.io) to talk about networks. I conveyed to undergraduates my ideas for how ecology, evolution and their interplay should be understood in light of biological system properties.

Landscape structure as a driver of eco-evolution in hostโparasite systems
Abstract. Spatial network structure of biological systems drives ecology and evolution by distributing organisms and their genes. The ubiquitous hostโparas
