To both of the lovely people who follow me: Happy to announce that Iβve been promoted to Full Professor! Very cool to not be an βAss.β anymore.
π§ͺ Detailed data viz NYT article, out today, on the extent of funding cuts at the National Science Foundation.
This "broken pie chart" is neat & new to me: Powerfully shows the slowdown in new NSF awards across areas.

Back to back graduations! Thatβs hard work. Great to see you there, Matt!
Updated lab group photo, Spring 2025 edition. Very proud of this team and everything they have accomplished this semester! We took this group shot on Friday, right after one of the best lab meetings ever.
Congratulations to our own Naya Mahabir representing the Izquierdo Lab @hofstrau.bsky.social and winning the Johnson Award for Best Poster at the TriBeta Biology Honors NE-1 Convention this weekend! Wow! Very proud of you, Naya!
Once again, the brave students of my General Microbiology #BIOL134 course @hofstrau.bsky.social ventured into the glove bag this week to learn a little about anaerobic microbiology. Good work, everyone!
Congratulations to our labβs Naya Mahabir for getting her research in our lab featured in the latest issue of @hofstrau.bsky.social Horizons for Undergraduate and Graduate Research! #hofstrabiology
A master class. Iβve inspired my virology course largely on his approach and the many online resources he provides for faculty and students. Always grateful and always in awe.

Every chance I get, I give LAB GIRL to a buddying scientist as either a graduation or a moving-to-the-next-stage present. And they love it! There are other books Iβve gifted but yours has been my favorite to give

One post for some of the amazing invertebrates we got to see in Belize in #BIOL139 including sea anemones, christmas tree worms, brittle sea stars and slate pencil urchins #hofstrainbelize2025
One post for the dedicated and curious Hofstra Biology students who participated in our #BIOL139 course documenting the vast diversity of vertebrates and invertebrates in these coral reef ecosystems. #hofstrainbelize2025
A juvenile lionfish (Pterois volitans), a first for me in #BIOL139 in Belize. Still venomous and dangerous. We also had the opportunity to see an adult being eaten by a moray eel. The circle of life. #hofstrainbelize2025
Every time I take students to the beach to go sampling we have to drive through marshes first, always a great opportunity for βHey guys! Smell that? What do you think it is?β
Our time teaching #BIOL139 in Belize has come to an end. But hereβs one of my favorite invertebrates in this place. Iβve gotten better at taking pictures of these guys in turbulent waters, but this one is my favorite. This is the flamingo tongue snail (Cyphoma gibbosum) on a sea fan coral.
Back to the water today for #hofstrainbelize2025, as we visit Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley, where we saw this beautiful bridled burrfish, as well as Christmas tree worms, sleeping sharks and a spotted scorpionfish, among so many others. Follow us on @hofstrainbelize on instagram to see more!
#BIOL139 took a break from swimming through coral reefs to visit the Mayan ruins of Altun Ha and learn more about the history of this amazing place. #hofstrainbelize2025
Greetings from Belize, where my friend Dr. Jason Williams and I are teaching BIOL139! Follow our adventures on Instagram at @hofstrainbelize. Iβll also be posting some of my favorite pictures here!
I know!!! So crazy that they look real and you have to double check to find out that they are not. Becoming very common practice unfortunatelyβ¦ βΉοΈ
