We need an action plan for the West End, beyond Oxford Street, including:
- Reintroducing Congestion Charging on weeknights
- More controlled parking with tariffs that discourage SUVs
- Reallocating kerbside to create more space for people and for essential use like loading bays and taxi ranks

Traffic in the West End is being made worse by #carspreading - the rapid growth in the size of private vehicles including supersized SUVs - which means each car now takes up more road space, slows traffic further and increases road danger.

It may be surprising to learn there are no parking controls in the West End in the evening, aka free parking 🤯. Hours of control for paid for parking bays end after 6.30pm. It's no wonder our public squares turn into car parks and you can't walk down the pavements safely... 4/9
It won't be surprising to hear the Congestion Charge operated until 10pm on weeknights there was a marked drop in evening car entries but after this was removed, traffic volumes rose sharply again. Loss of revenue too - particularly sore for Londoners as tube fares increase again this spring... 3/9

It's worth adding we shouldn’t have had to wait so long - it is astonishing this was first consulted 5 years ago by previous government. We need to ensure cities get necessary resources to use these powers.
Great to see new powers for councils to end the blight of pavement parking in England. This announcement couldn’t have come soon enough given cars are getting heavier and wider every year making pavement parking even more untenable and dangerous. #carspreading
