Beyond energy, closure of Hormuz Straits could have ripple effects on agricultural staples
• Around one-third of global fertiliser supplies pass through Hormuz
• Prolonged conflict could prompt producers to cut back on fertiliser use, reducing yields

Europe’s impotence extends to energy
The political momentum behind decarbonising the continent’s energy system has dissipated
"This is natural: creative destruction has few champions. But it is not wise. Europe is clearly capable of speeding up its transition to energy independence via renewables." Excellent piece by @martinsandbu.ft.com www.ft.com/content/a6be...

Merci Olena !

Hair apparent: inside the transplant capital of the world – photo essay
It is estimated that every year more than one million bald people fly to Istanbul. They go for two reasons – hair transplant quality and competitive costs
Incredible scenes in this photo essay & story on Istanbul's hair transplant industry (which is v evident if you transit through the airport).
Particularly enjoyed this from Dr Serkan Aygin, who has a luxuriant head of hair AND a Kehinde Wiley work in his clinic: “I myself admit I had a transplant”

Opinion | Who’s winning the U.S.-Iran war? Russia and China.
Oil disruption benefits Russia, as does less U.S. aid for Ukraine. And Iran distracts from China.
Zelensky said more Patriots were used in 3 days fighting Iran than used by Ukraine since 2022. Imagine how much Ukrainian energy infrastructure—and how many Ukrainian civilians—might have survived the winter if Trump had sent more Patriots to Ukraine rather than to a “war of whim.” wapo.st/4ui9QzJ

Bangladesh is (by far) most exposed to disruptions of LNG shipments from Gulf
• Gas makes up >40% of country's energy mix and country relies heavily on Gulf supplies
• Pakistan and India also rely on Gulf supplies, but share of gas in these countries' energy mix is low

Europe’s impotence extends to energy
The political momentum behind decarbonising the continent’s energy system has dissipated
"Imagine if...large-scale programme had been funded to produce batteries at scale and install them in...European households" @martinsandbu.ft.com
Fun fact, we🇧🇬 decided to use RRF🇪🇺 to support batteries (grid-scale). Today, we have 2 of largest BESS in EU and soon up to 10,000 GWh- all in <4 years.

Defenders of the rules-based system would have condemned the invasion of Iran, and not signed the Turnberry deal. But if the EU was militarily strong enough to defend itself and Ukraine, without US help, it would be able to defend the values its citizens believe in. That should be the agenda.

Pension reforms is key to boosting EU investment
• If EU countries had pension funds worth 140% of GDP (the US figure), they'd be worth ~$30trn
• If quarter was invested in equities, with just a fifth staying in EU, pool of capital would grow by $1.5trn

Oil Prices Surge Above $100 a Barrel for the First Time in Almost Four Years
“It was the first time in almost four years that the global oil benchmark, known as Brent, cost more than $100 a barrel. Oil is now around 50 percent more expensive than it was before the United States and Israel began attacking Iran on Feb. 28.”
