I’m trying to quit smoking

again, for the finances
not for health or survival
or actually for survival
but the kind of survival
where people tend to say
it’s gonna be okay and they
really mean it in their eyes,
not like with cancer, how
people tell people with cancer
it’s gonna be okay and really
what they’re trying to say is I
will miss you when you’re gone

Q&A: Kwaneta Harris on the Black History That Shaped Her "I am perceived as a Black woman before I am perceived as an American, before I am perceived as a journalist, before I am perceived as human."

The 2025 “Prison Journalist of the Year” says Black history is the foundation her work is built upon.

ICE Arrests Have Made My Dad Scared to Visit Me in Prison My dad is fourth-generation American. But he looks Hispanic, and that’s enough to get harassed or detained in the United States.

My dad is a U.S. citizen. His family immigrated to the States generations ago. But because he looks Latino, he’s worried he’ll be harassed or detained if he makes the six-hour trip to visit me.

Cancer in Confinement PJP writers on suffering from the leading killers in behind bars — a problem of neglect, delayed care, and poor coordination

"In 2017, when Ray’s throat started hurting, he just thought he needed to quit smoking. Although that was definitely true, the knot that soon developed in the side of his neck caused concern. He sought help from medical, and weeks turned into months then stretched to more than a year."

Fuck!

Fuck! Everything is so bad!!
There’s an auction on dreams —
Bonanza! Palooza! Extra-
vaganza! Our one reverie sold
for cents on the dollar. We got
to be so good just to hold on
to what we got — they have us
rung like trees, growing half
a centimeter a year and calling it
progress. In the century it takes
to see a difference, we’re all dead.
Fuck. I just want to say something
true that doesn’t hurt — palms
and love handles say perfect
ain’t the only way to stay alive.
If I’m wrong, let me down easy.

I ask:
where is our voice?
where are the ghosts wearing our lips and
our sound?
so that we can do something about this amnesia
calling:
all ghosts who spit with fury at our fear of being awakened from
this coma
calling all ghosts.
calling all ghosts …

I ask: where is our voice? where are the ghosts wearing our lips and our sound? so that we can do something about this amnesia calling: all ghosts who spit with fury at our fear of being awakened from this coma calling all ghosts. calling all ghosts …

How Plants and Pups Helped Transform This Prison Unit Plants and puppies have turned our unit from gloomy and depressing to lively and more humane.

"As a prisoner performs a spinning jump-kick, another crouches, summoning the power of the ancients to deliver the fatal blow. The two prisoners are playing a video game while a group huddles around them. In the background, a dog barks."
