55 years ago, yesterday, BBC Radio Humberside officially launched from Jameson Street via the m.v Miranda in the North Sea. The station covered the largest geographical area of any BBC station at the time. Today, it emits from Dock Street, Queens Gardens.

#OTD in 1968, Harry Eddon was found as the sole survivor of the #RossCleveland which sank off Ísafjörður, Iceland, where it was sheltering from a blizzard. Part of the larger Triple Trawler Tragedy, which claimed 58 lives in January-February 1968.

#OTD in 1734 the iconic King Billy statue was officially opened. Made by Flemish sculptor P. Scheemakers it replaced an earlier Market Cross.
It has served as a landmark in the city ever since. The image is the earliest depiction in 1735.

Sewa Singh Gola was one of the first Sikhs to move to Hull in the 1970s, and a founding member of the first gurdwara in the city. We are currently working with his family to create an archive about Sewa’s life and the wider Sikh community in Hull

#OTD in 1909 M. E. Ling of #Hull arrived in Edinburgh to attempt to fly across the Firth. The Ling Monoplane, later known as the Newington Monoplane was designed and built in the city. It was one of the regions first attempts at flight.
