Back in 1978, I traveled through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India & Nepal with my best friend on the ultimate trip for any backpacker — the so-called Hippie Trail.
“On the Hippie Trail” features my journal & photos from that journey — and the paperback edition will be available 4/21!
My friend, who was 12 years old and lived near the embassy, watched the helicopters depart. He said his neighbors committed suicide.

Gen. Grynkewich: "What I've observed over the course of studying air power in history is that any time you attack a civilian population, you usually end up finding that it just hardens their resolve."
By the time the last American combat troops left Vietnam in 1973, the US military had dropped some 4.6 million tons of bombs on Vietnam, destroying a large percentage of the nation’s towns and villages and killing an estimated 2 million Vietnamese people.
Operation Rolling Thunder was the codename for a bombing campaign during the Vietnam War. US military aircraft attacked targets throughout North Vietnam from Mar 1965 to Oct 1968. This massive bombardment was intended to put pressure on North Vietnam’s leaders.

Union Pacific’s legendary Big Boy No. 4014 is the world’s largest operating steam locomotive. During WWII, the Big Boy locomotives hauled freight over Utah’s Wasatch Range. Eight locomotives were preserved more than 60 years ago, but Big Boy No. 4014 is the only active one traveling the rails.
