Wildfire climate connection
Climate change, including increased heat, extended drought, and a thirsty atmosphere, has been a key driver in increasing the risk and extent of wildfires in the western United States during the last ...
ABC, NBC & CBS dedicated about 16 minutes of airtime last night to the California wildfires without once mentioning climate change.
Since the news failed do it's job, here's a short summary of the role of climate change and wildfire risk:

The image shows the cover of the book Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. It has a gold background with intricate designs resembling clouds, stars, and celestial elements. A dragon is depicted in the center, forming part of the title.
Kicked off my year in reading with a reread of Fourth Wing in anticipation of Onyx Storm being released later this month...
I love rereading books, particularly in fantasy series, because things hit different when you KNOW what's up. This was a GREAT reread. ๐

The book cover of Reckless by Lauren Roberts. The title is written in a bold, elegant font, with the tagline "Traitor. Tormented. Destined for each other." above it. The design features a silver arrow head with intricate details, set against a background of lush green foliage and scattered red flower petals. At the bottom, it notes that the book is "From the bestselling author of Powerless."
Could. Not. Put. This. Down.
Definitely lived up to the expectations set by "Powerless" and I have already pre-ordered Fearless.
This series has sky rocketed to my favourites list this month. 2024 has been a good year for reading for me!

It should be noted I am up and dressed so early because I'm working today.... but the list of clinics I would work at on Tibb's Eve is very short.
Basically, it's one clinic long.
But working with the team at Beachy Cove means hanging out with friends ๐ฅฐ
Hope ye have a lovely day! ๐

The image shows a smiling person wearing glasses and a festive red shirt with a Christmas sweater-style design. The shirt features reindeer, trees, snowflakes, and the text: "ALL IS CALM, ALL IS BRIGHT, EXCEPT ON TIBB'S EVE." The person has long red hair and is indoors.
My favourite part of Christmas used to be Christmas Eve, for a number of reasons.
Some time ago, it became Tibb's Eve. Largely because it was the night for friends ๐
What we do together to celebrate has shifted with time, but it remains the thing I look forward to the most ๐ฅฐ

People suggesting Benadryl as a sedative gives me eye twitches.
Like, I know maybe a couple people who find it makes them feel really sleepy but SO MANY people think it is a sure bet sedative... and in particular they think it will sedate a high stress dog in any meaningful way ๐

The image shows a living room. A television on a dark TV stand is displaying Bill Nighy wearing headphones, recording into a microphone with a colorful shirt on. Below the TV is a black entertainment stand with some shelves holding papers and a small container. To the right of the TV, a white door with a hanging bag is visible. In the foreground, an open cardboard box filled with envelopes and is placed on a small table. The box has the hashtag "#MadeWithVistaPrint" printed on the side. The floor is wooden, and a beige blanket is partially visible at the bottom of the frame.
Time for the annual rewatching of Love Actually, while I write up Christmas cards.
I will not argue with anyone that this is a good movie or that it isn't problematic... but I will also not stop enjoying it ๐คทโโ๏ธ๐

Bunsen and the giant cyst
Rare tapeworm infection in Alberta dog spotlights an emerging infectious disease
This is an interesting story because it really highlights how important it is to not make assumptions when it comes to parasites. We don't find what we don't look for.... this tapeworm is rare, but it is definitely in Canada and it can do some gnarly things to dogs *and humans*. #VetMed

The technician was in a very remote (Northern Canada) area, hospital only option for vaccine. No travel clinics.
And I'm in Newfoundland, Canada - my doctor ordered a titre, and the lab literally didn't run it ๐ (like, said no.)
It's really not taken seriously here ๐

(I should clarify - the technician wasn't looking for post exposure vaccine, she just wanted to be generally vaccinated. Which is strongly encouraged in other parts of the country where rabies is more prevalent.)

I have also been unable to get my titre done in years. It is alarming how much the human health care team does NOT know about rabies, just because the risk is so low here...

Somewhere I work where rabies IS a concern, a technician wanted to get vaccinated for rabies as a precaution after a concerning bite case (that wasn't rabies, but reminded clinic of the risk)...
...and the MD she saw said the risk of the vaccine wasn't worth it ๐

Well, if I don't use "honkers bonkers" casually in my day today I will consider myself a failure.
(Already considering how to work it into a medical record ๐ค "Unable to assess bite as puppy was honkers bonkers" sounds legit, honestly...)

My week so far:
Crying over the Eras Tour being over, enjoying being back at my "home away from home" clinic, being unreasonably emotional over everything Taylor Swift, finding my favourite seasonal ice cream in stock, dropping my speaker on my foot.. and yet you tell me it is only Tuesday?!?

Reading comprehension skills are... um.... not strong on average these days.
I admit I sometimes miss that we're in a flashback, or forget a thing... but I can usually suss it out on my own with a little effort. Expending effort is also not strong these days, when thoughtless comments are so easy ๐ซ

2 weeks in Corner Brook done, I am now in Grand Falls Windsor.
I grew up with a white Christmas being essentially guaranteed, with snow well established in November. So spending the 4 weeks before Christmas *not* on the Avalon fills my white Christmas loving heart. ๐

Focus of photo is the magnificent domestic long hair cat with golden eyes. She is mostly white, with a black back.. one ear white, one black, the black fur spills down over on side of her face. A sweet single black spot is on tbe opposite muzzle right by her nose. She is relaxed and content up across my chest, and my face peeks out behind her.
As a traveling relief vet, I have so much appreciation for clinic cats.. especially the ones who literally crawl up my coat to say hello in the morning ๐ฅฐ
Miss Fanny is light as a feather compared to my beasties, but still a quality cuddler. ๐ป

Though also, re:cost, also agree and I wish more clinics were mindful in their pricing of cytology so that step would be more palatable...
...but for large dogs, reaching for 2nd and 3rd line antibiotics is probably MORE expensive.

Agreed. I think the simplest statement is "I wish people would stop treating infections like they are simple and ignore the nuance." ๐
Like, why are so many quick to culture ears - when that is generally clinically not at all helpful - but never culture recurring UTIs? ๐ค

I mean, at this point with many of the clinics I work at I would be thrilled if they did a culture at all ๐ซฃ
I can hear a veterinarian say "I'm going to switch to a stronger antibiotic" from a mile a way, and the passion with which I try to convince them to do a culture first is a bit unhinged ๐

A bright circle fills most of a dark field. This is the view down a microscope showing a dark purple budding yeast and some amorphous debris also stained purple.
Antimicrobial stewardship means, at minimum, doing cytology EVERY time you see dermatitis and only reaching for oral antibiotics when you *know* they are indicated.
Saw an itchy dog today with an area of redness, hair loss, and crusts... and cytology showed nothing but yeast. ๐ง

The perfect room temperature when chilling on the couch and watching TV is "I need a blanket" degrees Celcius.
Being warm is hellish. I love sweaters, slipper socks, and soft blankets. I always want to be just a little bit cold.
I will not be taking questions at this time.

Book cover for "Ledge" by Stavry McEwan. It's a dark blue background with frost coming in from the edges, a crack across the middle, and the title written vertically with the author name in 2 horizontal lines at the bottom.
Earlier this week, I finished this book and I LOVED IT SO MUCH.
My library does not currently have the rest of the series, and 2 other books I had on hold are now available... but the urge to just go buy the rest of the trilogy right now is STRONG ๐ถ
